About The Role


We are currently looking to hire for a new position within our Asset Performance team! Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Performance Engineering, the Wind and Solar Performance Engineer plays a critical role in optimizing the performance, reliability, efficiency, and risk profile of our wind and solar power generation assets. This role combines a strong understanding of business requirements with a data-driven approach to develop and implement equipment strategies, identify areas for improvement, conduct analysis, perform troubleshooting, and provide recommendations to enhance the overall performance of TransAlta’s wind and solar assets.


This is a full-time salaried position based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.


What You Will Do


  • Support the development of asset-level strategies
  • Develop and maintain performance metrics for each asset
  • Develop, implement, and continually improve equipment strategies to optimize TransAlta’s wind and solar power generation equipment including gearboxes, blades, solar panels, inverters, and associated equipment
  • Work closely and collaboratively with a cross-functional group of business and technical teams to implement improvement and optimization strategies
  • Maintain a network of industry contacts to stay abreast of industry developments and strategies that can be incorporated into TransAlta’s business
  • Monitor changing business/regulatory requirements, and emerging technologies to identify potential upgrades, retrofits, monitoring techniques, or optimization opportunities for our wind and solar assets
  • Analyze operational data, performance metrics, and maintenance records to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement


What We Need From You


To be successful in this role, we are looking for applicants with the following skills, mindset, and qualifications/experience:


  • Ability to travel to our various wind and solar sites, as needed.
  • Familiarity with predictive maintenance techniques, condition monitoring systems, and asset performance monitoring tools
  • Proficient analytical skills and the ability to analyze operational data from wind farms and solar power plants to identify trends, anomalies, and potential areas for improvement and manage from analysis through to resolution
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage/drive multiple projects simultaneously
  • Previous experience in the wind and solar industry, with a track record of working on performance assessment, reliability assessment, optimization, and operational troubleshooting projects to develop innovative solutions
  • Deep understanding of wind and solar power generation equipment design, operational characteristics, failure modes, economics, performance analysis, and optimization is essential
  • Willingness to stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in wind and solar technology equipment, upgrades, monitoring, and peer practices and to implement innovative solutions for improving performance and efficiency
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey complex topics collaborate with cross-functional teams, and present findings/recommendations to stakeholders
  • Professional certifications related to asset management, project management, or renewable energy are desirable
  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical, or related field)
  • Experience or specialization in renewable energy systems, with a focus on wind and solar technologies.
  • Understanding of renewable energy data sets including time series data, maintenance data, and control system event data
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in asset management, performance optimization, or related roles in the wind and solar power industry
  • Knowledge of energy market dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and environmental compliance requirements
  • Proficiency in software tools and programming languages relevant to renewable energy analysis and simulation such as time series analysis tools (example: Aspen Process Explorer or PI), Excel, MATLAB, Python, or specialized wind and solar modeling software
