We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention toward safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mockup Designer to join our Mockup and Prototype department. In this hands-on role, you will work directly with members of Space System Development translating design concepts into mockups, testbeds, and prototypes of next-generation, design-forward spacecraft, and habitats. The ideal candidate is fluent in multiple fabrication techniques, able to learn new ones appropriate to the fidelity required and has a critical eye for details. The ability to turn conceptual designs into presentation-quality structures and spaces is critical. In addition, adapting to changing responsibilities is crucial in this role because of the demands of integrating a variety of mechanical systems. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to revolutionize safe human spaceflight.

As a mockup designer, you will support the execution of special projects within Space System Development. This also includes liaising between SSD and various support groups to ensure critical hardware is delivered on time. Other responsibilities include early Build/Flow development and trade study support to ensure concepts can be manufactured within schedule and budget requirements. You will be responsible for identifying roadmaps to drive the development to completion. At times you will personally marshal critical hardware to maintain the schedule.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with clients to understand their requirements, fidelity levels, and schedules and ensure the design and build will meet the targets.
  • Conduct build/flow development and trade studies to ensure the concepts can be manufactured within schedule and budget requirements.
  • Hands-on technical lead providing support to the team of fabricators during the builds.
  • Identify roadmaps to drive the development to completion.
  • Design and development of mockups, testbeds, and prototypes
  • Work closely with other departments, such as engineering and manufacturing, to ensure that designs are feasible and can be produced at scale.
  • Be scrappy and resourceful, finding creative solutions to problems even when resources are limited.
  • Manage a team of fabricators, providing guidance and support to ensure the project targets are being met.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, and SolidWorks.
  • Passionate about design and hands-on in the design process.
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, team members, and other departments.
  • Proven record in a wide variety of hardware fabrication including but not limited to machining, welding, assembly, bonding/adhesives, composite fab, test support, critical lifts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Extensive experience with fabrication techniques and rapid prototyping processes.
  • Experience in establishing priorities in hardware procurement and fabrication and communicating these priorities to the team.
  • Passion for our mission: Millions of people living and working in space!
  • Must be resourceful and able to find creative solutions to problems, even when resources are limited.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Hands-on experience with building hardware desired
  • Extensive experience in mockup and prototype design.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
