Summary


The Media Specialist I produces high quality creative media assets and solutions for new or existing campus-wide initiatives. This position requires entry level production experience, customer service, communication, project management, and organizational skills.


Organizational Status


UBC Studios provide a suite of digital media services to the University community including strategic enterprise-wide projects. This unit reports into the greater UBC IT Teaching and Learning Services portfolio.


This position reports to the Executive Producer, UBC Studios. The Incumbent is a member of the UBC Studios team and provides entry to intermediate level production and post production to all clients including external clients and University community members (alumni, faculty, staff and students). This position helps in the development of digital media assets for use across all client stakeholder environments (funded and cost recovery). This position is also responsible for the development of digital media for promotional purposes.


This position collaborates with management and staff from all sections of Information Technology. This position also works in partnership with the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technologies to deliver funded services for academic units. This position also interacts directly with other University technology professionals on relevant projects and tasks.

Work Performed


  • Assist in post-production activities, including but not limited to ingesting and transcoding media, video editing, motion graphics, music research, outputting media, etc.
  • Triage client requests as appropriate to more experienced colleagues or the Manger.
  • Coordinate collection and drop-off of administrative resources as well as any additional equipment rented by the Studios on a project basis; the incumbent may be required to drive a vehicle to perform these functions.
  • Assists with projects as required.
  • Assist in tasks related to production such as setting up and tearing down equipment and the set both in studio and on location, camera operation, and related tasks. The incumbent will inspect all incoming equipment from project for proper functionality and wear and tear, managing overall equipment repair and inventory records.
  • In collaboration with the team develops and produces creative media assets.
  • Conducts testing on customized digital assets to ensure they meet specifications and makes suggestions to resolve issues.
  • Co-ordinates and schedules the booking of studio space, set up of studio shoots, production equipment as well as all related resources and prepares related documents.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • On direction from more senior team members, packages in-house, custom, digital assets for production.
  • Maintain business documents such as workflow and instructional manuals to ensure knowledge transfer amongst the team.


Consequence of Error/Judgement


The primary focus of this unit is to provide high quality digital assets and technical support to faculty, staff, students and external clients. This position makes decisions regarding the development of media resources and technologies. Disruptions to these projects or improper delivery of assets (over budget, over time or improperly produced) could have a significant impact on clients and their ability to deliver on strategic goals (academic mission, sustainability, operations, etc.)


Errors in judgment, poor planning, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on the delivery and consumption of digital media resources by clients. Unreliable systems or poor project management could lead to missed contractual obligations for performance and availability which would damage the reputation of UBC and UBC-IT. This could adversely impact the University community, including the stakeholders involved, which would result in possible lost productivity, funding and revenue.


Supervision Received


This position reports to the Executive Producer, UBC Studios within the Application Management Services Group in UBC Information Technology. This person also takes direction from the Team Lead, or designate.


Supervision Given


Provides project-based supervision to student employees.


Preferred Qualifications


Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute.Higher Education in Film School or Film Programs is an asset.Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Demonstrated entry level expertise in digital asset production (video production, motion graphics/after effects, visual effects, sound, etc.) - Working knowledge of common production software including, but not limited to, Adobe Creative Site - primarily Premier with a specialty in one of the following areas: After Effects, Speed Grade, Photoshop and/or Illustrator


  • Knowledge of key industry standard pre-production, production and post-production processes and techniques (such as but not limited to planning/design, production, editing, finishing, quality assurance, etc.)
  • Knowledge of standard office software (including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Word/Excel/Powerpoint)

  • Ability to operate industry standard equipment (such as but not limited to video cameras, lights, audio equipment, communications equipment and accessories) at an entry level.
  • Knowledge of key industry standard post-production software (such as but not limited to Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Creative Suite, Avid, DaVinci, etc.)
