Manager, Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering

Job Summary:

This position is directly responsible for supervision of electrical, instrumentation and control personnel ensuring all work produced by the Department matches internal Design Standards, Regulatory Standards and customer expectations of all ERCO manufacturing sites and for external customer sites. Other duties include:

  • Initiate, implement and manage the Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering activities based on best practices and standards.
  • Manage and develop the Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Team and assign responsibilities within the Department for E&I Projects.
  • Coordinating support from other employees and departments not directly involved in the Electrical, instrumentation and controls.
  • Ensure a commitment by all direct reports to safety, health, environment and process safety management.
  • Oversee the work of the Department to ensure Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls engineering work within schedule and budget while meeting customer expectations.
  • Participate and provide direction for the Engineering Department as a member of the Leadership Team.
  • Manage and lead in developing Department Procedures and Electrical/Instrument Standards to meet ISO compliance.
  • Selection of major electrical, instrumentation, controls and DCS, SIS and Control Systems Security equipment.
  • Evaluate and identify areas of concerns for safety, environmental and security as well as opportunities for improvements based on Electrical, instrumentation and control product life cycle.
  • People management; reviews, performance and administrative issues.
  • Coordinate training for new technologies and assists staff in resolving technical problems.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversees development of instrumentation engineering activities for projects including; design, detailed engineering purchasing, schedules, construction, commissioning and post project reviews. Oversees development of electrical activities including; electrical project execution, spending plans and monitoring of ERCO plant electrical performance & adherence to standards. Monitor workload of the Electrical & Instrumentation Department and proactively manage assignments to maintain department productivity. Provide technical support and guidance to the team as required to achieve results. Coordinates and monitors the performance of external engineering consulting firms.
  • Oversees the work of the electrical and instrumentation department to meet customer requirements. Monitors to ensure scope of work matches the customer requirements. Manages the ongoing activities of electrical and instrumentation employees. Lead the coordination, prioritization and scheduling of activities for the electrical and instrumentation employees. Coach, train, mentor and provide leadership to the Electrical and Instrumentation Department personnel to improve the capability of the group.
  • Represent engineering on committees outside of the engineering group. Provide engineering input and bring back knowledge to the group. Actively host sharing of electrical and instrumentation engineering knowledge and standards across the manufacturing plants. Actively participate in the Engineering Leadership Team providing guidance to the department. Interface with the two other Technical groups – R&D and Technical Services for external customers.
  • Responsible for performance management formal reviews twice per year, training and development plans for all direct reports. Prepare key accountability goals for each employee. Hold informal regular meetings to promote optimization of performance and continuous growth. Keeps senior management informed of project progress and latest industry practices. Recruit, hire, succession plan for department staffs and train/retrain personnel as needed to ensure the Department is staffed with the appropriate skills to effectively execute work and meet project schedules.
  • Manages the budget and cost control for the department. Authority for approving expenditures of up to $50K and overall responsibility for the management of projects – purchasing, external engineering and contractors at an annual value of $10 to $15 million dollars. Recommend vendors to be used to satisfy electrical and instrumentation specifications. Approve equipment purchases
  • Manages the ERCO standards used for electrical, instrumentation and control system design. Maintains knowledge of the latest regulations and practices in the workplace to ensure they are incorporated into designs. Support a culture of commitment to high standards of health, process safety and environmental responsibilities.

Key Attributes & Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Leadership, Strong communication and presentation skills, conflict resolution, budgeting, cost control, time management, liaising with multi-disciplines engineering team for complex problem solving and technical resolution for 10 years.
  • Hands on experience of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Safety Interlock Systems (SIS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) integration with Electrical systems, Asset Management Systems (AMS), Controls System Security and Security of Information Technology Systems for at least 15 years.
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) undergraduate degree in Chemical or Electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and passport for travel
  • Engineering, project management and best practices experience in chemical and associated industry for at least 10 years.
  • Electrical systems, Instruments and Controls Design, system integration, DCS, SIS, SCADA, Hardware and Instrument Specifications, Schematics, P&ID Layout, Quality Assurance, Historians, Safety Risk Assessment in chemical industries for at least 15 years.

Salary Range: 140 - 150K + Bonus
