Summary
The Manager, Database Operations is a role within BGIS’ database environments which leads the research, design, planning, implementation and support of existing and emerging database technologies, as well as the other Database Administrators (DBA’s) on the Team. The incumbent will take ownership of ongoing activities relating to database security, performance tuning, database upgrades, capacity planning, backup and recovery procedures and problem resolution. The incumbent will have significant input to our database platforms strategic roadmaps, providing licensing oversight, and align with industry best practices. The incumbent will also ensure that other DBA’s are held accountable to these standards and mentor them in the proper approach towards systems design, configuration, documentation, and management.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
People Leadership
Demonstrates strong, competent leadership for team members to guide them in reaching their full potential and meeting their objectives, which supports achievement of our corporate goals. Specifically, these responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Objectively recommends compensation adjustments
  • Full involvement with recruiting talent
  • Provides mentoring, coaching and guidance to all team members
  • Manages all aspects of performance
Database Management
  • In conjunction with Senior Director, I T Operations, manages department budget
  • Conducts database performance tuning and capacity planning
  • Creates and maintains architectural designs for current and future RDBMS layouts
  • Maintains all service delivery operations and service levels for database applications and services in all environments
  • Provides monthly KPI reports
  • Acts as the Lead of Databases in strategic planning, implementing database architecture, database design, and integration with other BGIS systems, problem notification, and availability reporting for databases
  • Coordinates database administration duties with System/Network Administrators to ensure compatibility with hardware and operating systems configurations
  • Ensures to follow change management best practices to database environment following pre-defined change management policies and procedures using ITIL framework
  • Plans database software upgrades from test through to production. Coordinates and works with stakeholders as required to ensure testing is thorough resulting in minimal business impact
  • Oversees and manages database backup and recovery strategy (online/offline backup and recovery)
  • Thoroughly understands database principles and methodologies and their connection to a variety of complex applications/systems
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and software development best practices. Principal researcher to support our existing and emerging database platforms including but not limited to (RAC, ASR,ASAM, RMAN, Data Guard, Golden Gate, TOAD, Oracle Database Appliance)
  • Possesses the ability to express IT technology decisions in terms of business outcomes by persuasively communicating ideas or positions that build support agreement or commitment
Risk Management
  • Develops and oversees effective disaster recovery policies and standards to align with enterprise business continuity management program goals; coordinate the development of implementation plans and procedures to ensure that business-critical services are recovered in outage; provides direction, support, and in-house consulting in these areas
  • Oversees and manages database backup and recovery strategy (RMAN – online/offline backup and recovery)
  • Establishes appropriate security framework to secure database objects to comply with industry standards and security audits
Stakeholder Management
  • Fosters an environment of collaboration and a strong customer service culture
  • Provides SME advice to the customer, and internal & external stakeholders
  • Builds relationships with vendors and service providers to ensure efficient and cost-effective acquisition of technology purchases; oversees service level agreement escalation and contract negotiations
  • In conjunction with Manager, Systems Integration/Process, responds to Customer RFI’s and RFP’s
Continuous Improvement
  • Devises unusual or radically different approaches to deliver value-added solutions
  • Builds, develops, and manages the enterprise technology services organization, consisting of direct reports and indirect reports.
  • Improves DBA performance through the application of original thinking to existing and emerging methods, processes, products and services
  • Employs sound judgment in determining how innovation will be deployed to produce more effective and efficient DBA operations
  • Continuously re-evaluates the infrastructure for optimization opportunities
  • Sets, monitors, provides and reinforces overall team performance feedback including performance improvement and decisions/approvals with respect to rewards redeployment and termination
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong vendor management and partner relations skills to identify and leverage resources internal and external to the enterprise to enhance capabilities that support business objectives.
  • Success in leveraging both traditional practices such as IT service management as well as emerging methods such as Dev ops that are optimized for agility
  • Thorough understanding of database principles and methodologies and their connection to a variety of complex applications/systems
  • Effective influencing and negotiation skills in an environment where resources may not be in direct control of this role
  • Superior skills in database security ensuring the security and integrity of all corporate application databases
  • Excellent service management planning and execution skills
  • Extensive knowledge in Oracle advanced features such as, RAC, OEM, Grid control, Data Guard & Golden Gate
  • Strong IT operations acumen including cross domain knowledge
  • Hands-on setup and tuning of Oracle database for High Availability and performance objectives
  • Ability to think outside the box and beyond the current solution to identify new and improved solutions or alternatives
  • Basic understanding of project management methodologies
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to communicate a vision that inspires and motivates DBA staff and aligns to the IT and business strategy
  • Excellent knowledge of server operating system tools and commands (Linux/Windows)
  • Database monitoring and high-availability setups
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute a plan that ensures that the right people are in the right role at the right time and that employees are highly engaged and satisfied
  • University Degree in Computer Science with 5-10 years of relevant job experience
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a team environment
  • Technical writing skills including documentation of procedures
  • Good customer service skills, with a clear understanding of customer impact and business requirement
  • Proficiency with different database technologies (Oracle, SQL, MySQL.)
  • Extremely developed troubleshooting/problem solving skills required to troubleshoot a diverse and complex range of applications and associated database issues
  • Advanced understanding industry best practices/standards ensuring key practices are continually incorporated into the BGIS environment
  • Exceptional and proven technical, analytical, organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to explain technical concepts and technologies to senior leaders and business concepts to the DBAs
  • Leadership, communication, delegation and mentoring skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple, concurrent and conflicting priorities and deadlines in a fast pace, dynamic and changing environment
  • Experience and budget planning and financial management
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills
