Duties
The incumbent assists the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) student to maximize his/her learning potential. The incumbent advocates, intervenes and acts on behalf of the CICE student with faculty, other College students, and College-wide services. Based on aptitude and skill assessment of students the incumbent will modify faculty course outlines, tests, and assignments.
Acts as a liaison between students, college faculty and staff by:
  • Providing classroom support such as note taking, lab support, group work facilitating and advocating the students concerns
  • Adjusting course outlines to reflect curriculum objectives to fit student needs pending faculty approval
  • Attending classes with the student to promote smooth integration with other students and classroom teacher
  • Providing a smooth transition into college / academic life
  • Meeting with teachers to promote inclusion of students in the classroom
  • Promoting inclusion of the CICE students in College social activities
Support Students By
  • Assisting in setting up peer tutoring
  • Modifying tests/exams and assignments to meet individual student needs, develop study strategies, review questions or project outlines and forward to faculty for approval
  • Preparing supplemental class material for student use
  • Invigilating tests and exams
  • Setting up and assisting with the use of adaptive equipment when needed
  • Advising students in solving problems such as accessing appropriate college resources (Financial Aid, Access and Support Centre, Academic Counseling, lockers, purchasing books, OSAP, insurance opt out, student ID, DC Connect, MyDC)
  • Determining techniques and tools to utilize for individual/group tutorial sessions based on the best fit for each individual student
  • Providing academic guidance and developing the path for students’ areas of focus
  • Using the computer and various computer programs to assist student in the learning process
  • Monitoring absences and escalating to team lead/Associate Dean as appropriate
Working with the CICE team the incumbent assists with admissions by:
  • Evaluating applicant submissions with recommendation to the Executive Dean
  • Conducting student interview/orientation sessions (provide tours) and/or information sessions
Assists With The Development Of Fieldwork Placements By
  • Assisting with student orientation to placement as required
  • Recommending possible placements and employers to students
  • Liaising between student/site supervisor and provide learning assistance to the student
Assisting with the continued success of the CICE Program by:
  • Promoting the program to internal and external stakeholders
  • Performs other related duties as required
  • Meeting with faculty periodically to review protocol and discuss new or revised approaches to support students’ learning needs
  • Tracking/filing and recording program documents and other pertinent program information for future reference by staff
Qualifications
  • Minimum two years of experience with persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities or significant learning challenges and experience in a teaching/tutoring environment.
  • Tact, integrity, diplomacy and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent and demonstrated problem solving, troubleshooting and conflict resolution skills.
  • Two-year diploma in Developmental Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker, Social Service Worker, Educational Assistant, or Early Childhood Education or equivalent.
  • Must be self-directed, motivated with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computer software i.e. word processing, email, online resources, internet research.
  • The ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
