The Opporunity


John Hancock US Technology Office within Manulife Financial is seeking an experienced hands-on Director level Data Architect to engage with multiple high-profile initiatives. This position requires an ability to lead the data architecture for the US segment and design highly scalable solutions that leverage existing and emerging capabilities to support our digital, customer-centric transformation. The Lead Data Architect is capable of translating business vision into a technology plan and works as a senior technical team member by providing oversight and expertise across various data domains and technologies to deliver forward looking business solutions.


The candidate will also be working with the other Solution and Enterprise Architects in the team to understand data requirements across the segment and implement industry best practices to refine our architecture.


Location: Preferred Hybrid (2 days in office and 3 days at Home) but open to Fully Remote from Canada or USA within EST or CST time zones.


Responsibilities


  • Demonstrated thought leadership abilities in a complex environment in driving operational excellence and best practices
  • Be able to remain pragmatic to deliver to key objectives while ensuring strategic fit.
  • Produce key design documents and incremental data architecture artifacts based on project needs and our architectural target state
  • Define and enforce data quality standards across value streams for the segment
  • Review artifacts related to the data domain and provide appropriate feedback
  • Partner with the segment data office team for the data strategy and roadmap and work with the delivery teams to drive data driven technical solutions to the business.
  • Identify complex issues in a timely manner and provide mitigation recommendations to the delivery teams
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach others for the data domain
  • Contribute to architecture and engineering communities across the company for related data architecture efforts
  • Be able to drive data architecture decisions with clear articulation of business benefits.
  • Be a thought leader in data architecture space through continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and collaboration to mature the practice.
  • Collaborate and incorporate feedback from various stakeholders to drive design decisions
  • Ability to whiteboard, present and discuss different solution options with pros & cons.
  • Develop related data frameworks, design patterns, proof-of-concepts, and best practices
  • Guide initiatives through various approval processes such as architecture review board
  • Design and monitor holistic data governance structures, data modelling and information management.


Qualifications


  • Experience working with data stewards, scientists, engineers, and product owners.
  • Financial services industry experience preferred
  • Exposure to the whole data life cycle including classification, categorization, design, role management, etc.,
  • Ability to quickly context switch between legacy and modern data approaches.
  • Current with modern data engineering principles, frameworks, and design patterns in a cloud environment – Azure preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines with attention to detail
  • Experience with IaaS, SaaS, and PaaS from data engineering & architecture perspective.
  • Experience with leading and implementing data governance and data quality initiatives
  • Experience with most of the following technologies - Informatica (ETL, CDI, TDM, IICS, DQ); DB/Middleware - SQL, Oracle, MySQL, Postgres, DB2, Hadoop, WebSphere, Pega; Analytics/Governance – Synapse, Databricks, MLOps, Purview; MDM – Informatica, InfoSphere, Quality Stage; Reporting – Power BI, Cognos, Tableau, Erwin.
  • Strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Data development & architecture experience - 7+ years
  • Excellent time management skills, including multi-tasking and prioritization
  • Familiar with scripting technologies such as Python, Perl, PHP.
  • Working knowledge with various python libraries/frameworks such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, PyTorch, Tensorflow, Keras is a plus.
  • Any certifications and proven contributions in the field of data engineering, science and architecture is a plus
  • Exposure to containerized and serverless workloads for various data assets, products.
  • Ability to estimate the financial impact of various data architecture alternatives
  • Understanding and exposure to security and compliance standards and best practices.
  • Experience with big/fast data, data lake, warehouse, and streaming approaches.
  • Must be comfortable working in an open, highly collaborative team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in areas such as teamwork, facilitation and negotiation
  • Overall information technology experience - 7+ years

Salary & Benefits


The annual base salary for this role is listed below.


Primary Location


CAN, Ontario - Full Time Remote


Salary range is expected to be between


$105,070.00 CAD - $195,130.00 CAD
