Job Description
Laboratory Technician


GENERAL DESCRIPTION Of RESPONSIBILITY


1.1 Under moderate supervision, to perform the routine duties necessary to ensure that laboratory services are of the highest quality, and to ensure that such services are provided in a timely, safe, legal, and ethical manner.


  • SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES


2.1 To receive, examine, and record through a log-in process, inbound items for testing.


2.2 To deliver test samples to the sample staging area.


2.3 To monitor the availability of the supplies needed for the testing processes, and to make any needs for such supplies known to Laboratory Management.


2.4 To prepare samples and quality control specimens, to prepare and standardize reagents and solutions, and to calibrate equipment needed for the testing processes.


2.5 To perform testing of samples and quality control specimens using specified methodology.


2.6 To verify and communicate the results obtained, and to make the appropriate entries into instrument logs, control charts, calibration records, laboratory worksheets, and any other media, whether print or electronic, required to ensure the validity and traceability of the information.


2.7 To maintain documentation, equipment, and work areas in a neat and orderly condition.


2.8 To assist in the training of less experienced employees.


2.9 To carry out the above responsibilities, and all others which may be assigned, in a manner demonstrating support for and adherence to the Company's Safety Policy and Procedures, Quality Policy and Procedures, Ethics Policy, Environmental Management System, Vision and Strategy, and to exercise good judgment, common sense, and diplomacy in so doing.


  • SUPERVISION EXERCISED


3.1 The position of Laboratory Technician normally carries no personnel responsibility or authority.


  • SUPERVISION RECEIVED


4.1 The reporting lines of the position may differ among the laboratories within the Company. Therefore, a Laboratory Technician may report to the Branch Manager, the Laboratory Manager, or the Laboratory Supervisor. The specific reporting line for a Laboratory Technician is determined by the Branch Manager. A Laboratory Technician always will have a functional reporting line through the Area Laboratory Manager, and will work in full cooperation with all Local, Area, and Regional departments in dealing with the assigned responsibilities.


  • QUALIFICATIONS


5.1 The Laboratory Technician is expected to have a diploma or equivalent, must have a grasp of basic mathematics, and, in the opinion of the hiring authority, must be trainable in the practical aspects of the job.


5.2 The Technician must be physically able to do the work required.


5.3 The Laboratory Technician should have a positive attitude, a high tolerance for job pressure and long hours, and the ability for working and communicating with persons of diverse personalities and backgrounds.
