Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Instrumentation Engineer interested in joining our growing international industry leading Process Automation team in the life sciences design. Join us and you’ll have the opportunity lead and contribute to our Process Automation instrumentation needs and to department initiatives. The Senior Engineer will consult with clients to develop the scope of the instrumentation requirements needed for their projects from Process Control Systems (PCS) to Environmental Monitoring Systems (EMS) and how they will interact with the Building Automation System (BAS) and other systems, such as Manufacturing Execution Systems, Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Laboratory Information Systems, et al. You will be working mainly from home (unless you prefer to work in our Vaughan office), but you’ll have to be available to travel for occasional team /client meetings (1-2 times/week).
The Senior Engineer will work with IPS Project Management to develop the workplan to complete the scope of projects in the Concept, Basis of Design, and Detailed Design phases. They will delegate tasks to junior instrumentation engineer(s), produce scope of deliverables, and review work product for their projects. This position is also expected to contribute to the development of junior engineers by reviewing their work and mentoring their education in Process Automation. Additionally, the Senior Engineer will contribute to ongoing department initiatives and propose and lead future department initiatives.
Specific Job Responsibilities Will Include
  • Consulting on the proper adoption of the ISA S95 levels to meet the client’s needs now and in the future.
  • Supports IQ/OQ development and participate in systems analysis, validation and verification.
  • Manages and delegates tasks to up to 4 project members to meet project scope, schedule, and deadlines.
  • Develops the design instrument specifications for DCS, PLC and SCADA based process control systems for IPS clients and projects.
  • Demonstrates subject matter expertise by developing department standards and improving existing work practices.
  • Reviewing and advising client on design decisions and capturing all pertinent decisions in project reports.
  • Progressive ability and aptitude to develop and mentor junior staff members.
  • Identifies, qualifies and collaborates with third party system integrators as necessary to support project and company business objectives.
  • Working with clients, other IPS disciplines, vendors to develop complete Automation solutions.
  • Identifies Automation deliverables in accordance to project scope with Project Management team.
  • Coordinates with project managers to determine project scope, complexity and schedule for project development.
  • Performs automation related job functions as assigned, including, I/O lists, Instrumentation lists and the specification of instrumentation and control element.
  • Works with end users and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) to coordinate application of automation products.
  • Writes scope of work for process, utilities and manufacturing controls based on preliminary reviews with the client.
  • Assisting clients in strategic evaluations to develop concepts supported by engineering studies for expanding, improving or automating existing facilities.
  • Actively collaborates with the process design and project teams to support execution of successful project studies.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Registered Professional Engineer designation preferred.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer aided drafting.
  • Experienced with ISA standards and the interpretation of P&I drawings.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with Pharmaceutical process instrumentation.
  • Experience with the development of control system network architectures.
  • Willingness to travel from time to time to US and within Canada as the projects require it.
  • Experience with the development of cGMP and GAMP automation lifecycle documents.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and presence to deal effectively with senior-level contacts.
  • Active participation in relevant professional associations preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering - ME/EE/ChemE/Automation/Manufacturing or equivalent.
