College Instructor - Developmental Services Worker Program, School of Community Services - Fanshawe Toronto @ ILAC

The Opportunity

We are looking for experienced, creative, and dynamic individuals to teach on-site (in-person) courses in the Developmental Services Worker Program (DSW) in the School of Community Studies, for the Fall 2023 semester.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Designs and delivers student-centered learning:

  • Develops weekly class sessions, activities and assignments which highlight the core curriculum and related topics
  • Delivers core curriculum as defined in program charter
  • Integrates industry-focused material into class discussion and assignments
  • Provides in-class instruction through a variety of modes, creating opportunities for student success

Enables student outcomes:

  • Identifies resources that support better student outcomes and directs students to those resources
  • Provides both formal and informal feedback (including marking of assessments) that clearly indicates the student’s progress through the material
  • Notes, intervenes, and escalates any case of academic misconduct, harassment or violation of the student code of conduct
  • Identifies students who are struggling, and intervenes to address roadblocks and challenges
  • Ensures that activities encourage active student involvement and monitors student participation
  • Ensures that learning activities are conducive to active student learning
  • Provides instruction that fosters student achievement of course and program outcomes
  • Helps students solve problems that may impede successful program completion through advising, assisting, and/or referring students on academic or personal matters
  • Establishes a classroom environment conducive to collaborative learning
  • Defines and communicates clear expectations about student progress through the learning journey



Required skills, experience & education

Education:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s Degree in a relevant and/or related discipline
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or a Diploma from a recognized institution relevant to the program and course of study (Human Services, Health Sciences, Developmental Services, Developmental Psychology, Growth and Development, Psychology) or related field

Work experience:

  • Significant experience or specialization in the specific area/field of instruction, either through education or minimum 3-5 years of recent and relevant work experience in developmental services, direct support, and/or health and social services
  • Experience with autism; mental health, behavioural, and developmentally delayed clients
  • Experience in an inter-professional and multi-disciplinary Developmental Services work environment

Teaching experience:

  • Preference will be given to candidates who can teach a wide range of topics reflective of the person-directed philosophy of supports that are mandated Ontario’s Development Services Sector.
  • Successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level
  • Knowledge related to the complex health and behavior needs of children and adults with developmental disabilities

Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong interpersonal & excellent communication skills with ability to relate effectively to a wide variety of learners
  • Combination of excellent leadership and teaching skills with a strong commitment to academic excellence and student success
  • Teaching experience with hybrid and/or online delivery preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
  • Ability to successfully maintain subject expertise through professional development, contact with industry, other educational institutions and/or professional bodies
  • Demonstrated ability to tie in developmental psychology with behaviour and educational strategies to develop and deliver effective and meaningful teaching plans
  • Knowledge of curriculum design and student evaluations
  • Strong technical/computer skills and familiarity with educational technologies and Learning Management Systems are required
  • Innovative and lifelong learner
