About Elsie Fabian School


The Elsie Fabian School opened its doors September of 2022 and we are looking for dynamic and passionate Educators who love Northern Living to join the team! The school incorporates both the Dene and Cree Language, culture, and Land-Based Education where students learn about their rich local history. Fort McKay is looking for talented educators who practice and believe that the well-being of the child is at the center of everything; this is the shared practice and belief of the Fort McKay elders, parents and community members.

About The Role


We are seeking a passionate Inclusive Education Teacher who is organized and looking for an enriching experience to be part of the new school team. The Inclusive Education Teacher will be responsible for teaching groups of students with mild or moderate disabilities. You will modify existing curriculum on basic subjects to meet each student’s learning needs and build individual lesson plans tailored to their specific needs. Ultimately, you will be the leader of inclusive education at the Elsie Fabian School. Elsie Fabian School.


KEY RESPONSIBITIES


Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Prepare students for transition to the next grade
  • Find engaging activities to teach skills (e.g. drawing and theater drama)
  • Assess students’ skills, abilities and learning requirements
  • Collaborate with the support staff (e.g. school counsellors and speech therapists) to create holistic intervention plans.
  • Collaborate with parents and school staff to track students’ progress
  • Design individualized educational Plans (IEPs)
  • Inform parents about their children’s performance
  • Adapt learning materials to students’ needs and keep track of and reflect on progress
  • Coach and mentor other professionals who work with children with disabilities
  • Monitor Students behavioral patterns and arrange appropriate interventions if needed
  • Classroom management and resolve conflict


Key Requirements


  • Minimum Bachelor of Education – Special Education Specialist
  • Good knowledge of current special education topics and methodologies
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Alberta Teacher’s Certificate
  • Extensive Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is considered an asset
  • Ability to speak, read and write Cree and/or Dene considered an asset
  • Successful candidate will be required to live in (or relocate to) Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required
  • Proven experience as a Special Education Teacher or relevant role
  • Experience working with children with a wide range of disabilities
