Histology Assistant Jobs

This position provides assistance to Pathologists in performing basic gross tissue examination. Histoassistants perform a variety of duties including, but not limited to collections and/or specimen processing, quality management, troubleshooting, and general support

Major Functions And Responsibilities

• Receives, prepares, processes and accessions surgical samples according to standard laboratory protocols
• Performs quality control and quality assurance activities, calibrates instruments and maintains records as appropriate to their scope of work.
• Assists pathologists, pathology assistants, grossing techs when grossing complex specimens
• Maintains, cleans, decontaminates and organizes work areas
• Prepare and perform gross surgical non-complex specimen dissection according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) up to and including level IV
• Operates, maintains and performs troubleshooting on a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Participate in training new staff and students
• Collects and processes a variety of specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, as appropriate to their scope of work.

Required Skills

• Strong interpersonal skills: communication with physicians, pathologists and other healthcare professionals are required
• The successful candidate must be able to work well independently and within a team

Required Experience

• Experience in Anatomic Pathology within the last 12 months or student experience within the last 12 months is required
• Proficiency in data entry.
• Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.
• Beaker Requisition Entry experience is an asset
• Strong data entry skills.

Minimum Qualifications

• Medical Terminology Body Systems I & II
• Medical Terminology Basic
• High school diploma
• Successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Assistant or equivalent is required, including the following courses:
