The HW Development Engineer – Power Is responsible for the analysis, design, development and testing of power conversion hardware for industrial motor drives. Responsibilities include generating design specifications based on product requirements; Developing proof-of-concept hardware; Performing laboratory tests to support qualification/certification testing of the product; Participating in project planning activity and assume responsibility for timely completion of tasks.


Responsibilities


  • Must follow and ensure safe work practices when working with high voltage power hardware.
  • Demonstrate excellent technical, oral and written communication skills, and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Apply simulation tools for modeling, design and troubleshooting of complex power electronics circuits, systems and applications. Develop simulation models to support field engineers and customer applications.
  • Apply the electrical circuit and electro-mechanical systems design principles to lead the development of power HW for AC/DC motor drives - rectifiers/inverters, switchmode power supplies, magnetics and filter design.
  • Apply DFSS principles for concept selection and robust design.
  • Understand and apply regulatory and certification standards that govern product design. Participate in regulatory standards committees and stay up-to-date on trends that impact product design and qualification.
  • Stay up-to-date with technology advancements in power electronics, components, and design and simulation tools. Participate in technology investigation projects to make enhancements to future product design.
  • Work in an agile/scrum environment.


Skills


  • Knowledge of electrical system design principles adhering to IEC/UL standards for industrial control panels.
  • Experience with the use and application of circuit simulation tools such as Matlab/Simulink, PSpice, Ansys EM Suite for analysis, design and troubleshooting circuits and systems.
  • Experience with power converter topologies for DC and AC motor drives – non-regenerative and regenerative rectifiers, inverters, switch-mode power supplies.
  • Proficiency with the use of instrumentation for power electronics converter measurements and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with selection and application of power semiconductor devices, subsystems and circuit components - IGBTs, SCRs, MOSFETs, gate drivers, voltage and current sensing, switch-mode power supplies, bus structures, capacitors and AC/DC inductors, transient protection, EMC compliance.
  • Working knowledge of electrical power systems, grounding, power system protection, power system transients, and power quality.
  • Application knowledge and system design experience of industrial motor/drive systems.
  • Experience with low and medium voltage printed circuit board design and manufacturing.


Basic Qualifications


  • This role is required to travel nationally/internationally up to 10%.
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with UL, CSA and CE standards and application to AC drives design (electrical safety, functional safety, EMC, energy efficiency) for design and qualification testing (e.g. UL/IEC 61800-5-1, IEC 61800-3).
  • M.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Working knowledge of failure modes and experience with troubleshooting subsystems and components of AC drives.
  • Working knowledge of PLC control systems and user interfaces.
  • Proficient with simulation of power converter and motor drive systems.
  • Demonstrated application of Design for Six Sigma principles.
  • Working knowledge of analog and digital circuit design for AC motor drives – protection circuits, gate drivers, feedback circuits, signal conditioning, switch-mode power supplies
  • Working knowledge of application issues with AC drives including mitigation methods – harmonics and power quality, motor insulation, common-mode currents, harmonic filters, dv/dt and sine-wave filters.
  • Experience with PWM techniques and knowledge of motor control algorithms.
  • Experience designing and creating AutoCAD electric drawings for industrial motor control systems.
  • Experience with magnetics design and specification.
  • Knowledge of product design using the Scaled Agile Framework environment (SAFe)
