Status: Contract Full Time; 13 month duration


Salary Range: $86,443-$108,052 per annum + plus comprehensive benefits

Location: 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga


Hours of work:  35 hours per week


Who We Are


The Public Health Intelligence division has a central role in monitoring and reporting on population health issues, identifying health disparities and emerging threats, conducting research, and advancing applied science and public health practice within the health department. Our goal is for the section's programs and services to be effective, evidence-informed and in accordance with Peel Public Health's strategic plan. The Population Health Assessment section applies epidemiologic and statistical methods to help monitor the health status of Peel residents. We play a major role in assessing and supporting strategic and program priorities for Peel Health and delivery of the Ministry of Health's Ontario Public Health Standards.


What You Will Do In This Role


The Epidemiologist, Population Health Assessment provides the Region with expertise in the areas of epidemiology, biostatistics, survey methods, and project management. The role includes monitoring the health status of Peel residents, investigation of health problems, leading projects concerning population health data, and provision of consultation services and epidemiological advice to divisional staff.


  • Contributing to population health assessment-related projects (e.g., health status reports, divisional epidemiologic or data-related projects)
  • Compile, verify, and report health status data by:
  • Leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of new health status data, and information collection and reporting methods
  • Assist the Manager, Population Health Assessment, in preparing and monitoring work plans for the Population Health Assessment team
  • Participate in departmental, regional, and provincial committees as required
  • Prepare and present health status reports as identified within the Ontario Public Health Standards that cover current key public health issues used to assist with assessing local health needs and in the planning and evaluation of programs
  • Consulting with staff regarding analysis and interpretation of health status data and advising on health assessment surveys and related research
  • Developing and implementing strategies to disseminate population health assessment data both internally and externally
  • Mentor and provide direction to other staff such as Masters-level students
  • Provide expert advice/consultation on population health data that are applicable to evaluation and research studies, interpretation of data/health information and investigations of communicable disease outbreaks or non-communicable disease clusters, and the application of epidemiology to the planning and evaluation of public health programs


What The Role Requires


  • Evidence of experience with epidemiological study design, and data collection
  • Expert knowledge of analytical, statistical, and epidemiological methods normally acquired by a MSc, MHSc, or MPH in epidemiology or equivalent


Skills/Abilities


  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge and experience in the use of computer software for statistical analyses and data visualization, in particular Microsoft Excel, Stata and PowerBI (other relevant examples: SPSS, R, SAS; Epi-Info, Microsoft Access)
  • Knowledge and understanding of public health and community health issues
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviours, and proactively managing bias
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to synthesize, evaluate and integrate health/epidemiological information from multiple sources, and to provide recommendations for policy formulation/dissemination
  • Demonstrated experience of project management, facilitation, report writing, and organization skills

In this role you will have the ability to work remotely and attend on-site when required based on operational requirements at the 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississaugaworksite. The frequency of on-site activities may vary on a weekly basis and based on operational requirements. Your remote work location must be located within the province of Ontario.
