Reporting to the Environmental Superintendent, the role will work closely with Environmental Technicians, Reporting Specialists and Operation’s Supervisors in a leadership role to oversee site activities and provide advice and assurance with respect to environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance. This role involves managing resources and logistics to execute various environmental monitoring programs as required under Baffinland’s environmental management system.
Main Accountabilities
  • Administrating and managing logistics and resources associated with environmental monitoring program execution within allocated budgets, including truck, snowmobile, boat and helicopter field programs.
  • Maintaining internal corrective action register including tracking inspection action items raised and following up as required with on upcoming or overdue actions
  • Assuming a leadership role in environmental management and instilling sustainable development values in employees of the Company, Partners, and Contractors through mentoring, teaching, and operations management.
  • Incident management and corrective action follow up
  • Evaluating, planning and improving environmental monitoring programs with procedural and/or equipment improvements.
  • Perform tasks set out in the Environmental Management Plan such as providing new hire orientations, attending toolbox meetings to present awareness topics and completing inspections of work sites to identify potential impacts or risks
  • Delivering staff environmental training/ orientation/ awareness for conducting fieldwork, sampling, inspections, equipment use and other environmental monitoring requirements.
  • Assuming a key supervisory role for Environmental Technicians, contractual staff and consultants.
  • Undertaking field monitoring and supporting external reporting as required under existing permits, licenses and Baffinland’s environmental management system.
  • Reviewing field monitoring and lab results data and implementing required corrective actions, follow-up monitoring or training to instill continuous improvement and adherence to applicable permits, licenses or regulations.
  • Addressing environmental concerns by identifying short-term and long-range issues and recommending options and courses of actions to monitor the company’s activities and obligations with respect to regulatory requirements, good corporate practice and commitments.
Main Qualifications
  • Experience with Equis environmental database
  • Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of current environmental legislation (Territorial and Federal)
  • Strong PC skills, proficient in Microsoft Applications
  • Diploma from a vocational institution Environmental science, environmental engineering, or similar physical or biological science related field required
  • From 5 years to less than 7 years Environmental experience on mining operations
  • Bachelor’s Degree Environmental science, environmental engineering, or similar physical or biological science related field preferred
