Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Arts Learning Technology Support, this position works with faculty members, instructional and user support staff with core duties in providing technical support and training on educational technology available at UBC (including Canvas, classroom response systems, peer assessment tools, Wordpress, and other technologies that are used for teaching and learning.). The incumbent will be responsible in the development of educational resources and assist faculty members in the development of online courses, assessments, and instructional videos. The role is also responsible to organize and conduct workshops on educational technologies, and developing training resources, ensuring that technologies effectively support the educational objectives in the Faculty of Arts. Additionally, the position will consult and liaise with instructors in the Faculty of Arts and with staff in internal and external departments or units on educational technology issues.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Senior Manager of Arts Learning Technology Support. The Educational Technologist will work closely with other members of the Arts ISIT team, faculty members, staff, and other external instructional support and educational technology units. This position coordinates with other Arts Learning Centre staff, as well as learning management professionals from other units on campus, to address teaching and learning needs of the University Community.
Work Performed
Specific Duties:
  • Contributes to program planning for online courses and educational technology initiatives in the Faculty of Arts.
  • Monitors and documents service delivery, identifies issues, resolves and/or escalates them as appropriate.
  • Performs environmental scans, conducts needs assessments and evaluation of teaching and learning technologies.
  • Consults with clients to analyze needs and advises, encourages, and supports faculty members in the selection of educational technologies appropriate to meet pedagogical goals.
  • Consults and liaises with instructors in the Faculty of Arts and with staff in internal and external departments or units on educational technology issues.
  • Responsible for the organization and evaluation of courses.
  • Creates, manages and administers online course environments and assists faculty members with other learning management system tasks (ie. html pages, quizzes, assignments, and instructional videos).
  • Provides expert and advanced advice on technical problems with the learning management systems and other educational technologies (i.e. blogs, wikis, classroom response systems, peer assessment tools, etc).
  • Analyze and identify technology needs; researches emerging technologies, their potential impact; recommends implementation.
  • Develop and deliver workshops and presentations on learning technologies. Trains faculty members to develop basic skills in use of course development tools and maintenance of web-based course materials. Trains users in a variety of software applications for both administration and teaching.
  • Responsible for the development, design, and evaluation of workshops and online resources on educational technology.
  • Documents and streamlines learning technologies support processes and procedures.
  • Prepare summary reports and data reports involving learning technologies and other project tasks.
  • Responsible for developing assessment and evaluation tools for evaluating online courses, workshops, training materials, and educational technology.
Core Duties:
  • Assists with the evaluation of teaching and learning strategies.
  • Interviews, trains and provides coaching/mentorship to work learn or co-op student staff within the Arts Learning Centre.
  • Researches current technical information relating to learning technology.
  • Assists with the design and development marketing strategies and campaigns on education technology.
  • Stays current with professional trends and maintains awareness of industry developments.
  • Produces and maintains technical documentation in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Acquires and maintains a working knowledge of the technical architecture of eLearning applications.
Performs Other Related Duties As Required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must be able to exercise a high level of judgment and tact when dealing with clients and handling personal information. Makes decisions regarding the programming and technical support through the application of basic information processing principles, theories and concepts. Errors in judgment could lead to work disruption, lost productivity, unnecessary costs and interfere with the ability of faculty members and departments to function effectively. Information must be kept under strict confidentiality because of the nature of the data stored in the systems.
The Learning Center is a very client-facing, interactive and highly visible functional unit at Arts ISIT. Effective operation and exemplary client interaction is critical for the ability of instructors to perform their duties, as well as the public perception of the whole unit.
Supervision Received
Works under the general direction of the Senior Manager of Arts Learning Technology Support. The work is reviewed for overall effectiveness and achievement of program objectives.
Supervision Given
May supervise or provide input to work learn or co-op student staff in the Arts Learning Centre. There are no direct reports to this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in QA testing, preferably on eLearning applications
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of instructional technologies, specifically UBC learning ecosystem, and the ability to learn new tools with ease.
  • Familiar with Adobe Creative Suite applications and video editing software (i.e. Camtasia, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere).
  • Familiar with a wide variety of eLearning applications like Canvas, blogs, wikis, iClickers, Top Hat, iPeer, ComPAIR, Peer Scholar, Qualtrics, Turnitin, Piazza, Crowdmark, CLAS, Kaltura and software such as Wordpress.
  • An understanding of academic culture and the nature of adult learning.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, and cloud file management applications.
  • Excellent planning, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and excellent customer service orientation.
  • A balance of creative, technical, analytical, and social interpersonal skills.
