Job Summary
The Digital Strategist is responsible for implementing the Arts Instructional Support and Information Technology (Arts ISIT) engagement strategy and related initiatives to create awareness and understanding of products and services delivered for the technological administrative and teaching needs of the Faculty of Arts.
This role will require the individual to translate technical and complex technology information to clear, concise, and engaging content that can be understood by different audiences for a variety of communications platforms to support university-wide efforts in teaching, learning, and administrative innovation. This includes writing for the monthly newsletter, website, and social media channels for the unit, managing and promoting workshops and events, writing reports, copy-editing technical documentation, and developing visual guides and training videos for Arts ISIT’s services.
This role will also support digital content strategy for the continual improvement of existing services and the development of new services that support the teaching and administrative needs of the Faculty of Arts. The incumbent will work closely with functional teams, leveraging best practices for content strategy, information architecture, and user experience (UX) to ensure that technological solutions align with the needs of Arts units and their users, and align with the identity of the Faculty.
The Digital Strategist collects and analyzes user analytics, ensures tools and web applications are effective and engaging in their visual and written approach, and enhances system-wide user experience. They are passionate about user experience, captivating writing, and data-driven engagement.
Organizational Status
The Digital Strategist is a member of the Service Strategy and Design team and reports to the Senior Digital Strategist within Arts ISIT.
In supporting the Faculty of Arts, the Digital Strategist interacts directly with the Arts Dean's Office, Heads and Directors, and faculty and staff. The position works collaboratively with teams within Arts ISIT, Arts Communications, Arts Communications Network, Arts Administrators Group, UBC Brand and Marketing, UBC IT, CTLT, Information Security Office, and other central units, and ensures adherence to Arts and UBC identity guidelines and best practices.
Work Performed
  • Creates awareness of services and shares updates in a timely manner by developing, curating, and editing a wide range of communication materials for the unit’s newsletter, website, and social media channels.
  • Works closely with the Senior Digital Strategist to provide content strategy for the creation and continual improvement of Arts ISIT services.
  • General
  • Helps coordinate focus groups, card sorts, surveys, and other methods of user testing, analyzes results, and makes recommendations.
  • Translates technical documents, white papers, and complex information into clear and concise communications for various stakeholder audiences, including committees, faculty, staff, and senior leadership.
  • Develops, analyzes, and shares communication and marketing metrics with senior managers and project team members.
  • Writes and edits copy to create consistency in grammar, format, message, tone, and voice while following UBC brand and style guidelines and aligning with Arts Communications’ guidelines.
  • Maintains content style guides, standards, documentation, and templates for Arts supported tools and applications.
  • Serves on project teams to support content strategy for projects, such as the Arts Website Renewal Program.
  • Cultivates strong relationships with internal clients and helps maintain the reputation of Arts ISIT through professionalism and positive contributions both within the faculty and on campus.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of established communications plans and makes recommendations for future improvements.
  • Workshop and Event Management
  • Helps develop visual training guides and videos to support written documentation on technological tools and services.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Provides digital content strategy consultation for clients in collaboration with Arts Communications in response to requests.
  • Writes, produces, and designs compelling content to meet operational goals and the needs of audiences.
  • Keeps current on major communications and content strategy trends, issues, and technologies, and recommends changes to ensure that Arts ISIT connects with its clients in an effective and appropriate way.
  • Creates reports, presentations, use cases, and other written materials.
  • Supports the unit in planning, developing, delivering, promoting, and evaluating training workshops and technology-related events for Arts ISIT services.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Arts ISIT plays a key role in supporting the Faculty of Arts’ strategic goals. The position requires initiative, strong attention to detail, accuracy, quality, and completion of projects within deadlines. Errors in performance of this position compromise the unit and Faculty's ability to communicate with its audiences. Errors in judgment and accuracy can seriously impact credibility throughout the university and beyond, affecting the image and reputation of individuals and the Faculty.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Senior Digital Strategist, Arts ISIT. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of defined goals.
Supervision Given
The Digital Strategist may provide direction to staff involved in specific engagement projects. The incumbent may also supervise student staff and provide technical guidance and training to full and part time staff, sharing expertise and acting as a resource for the Faculty.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic, project-based environment and handle multiple and concurrent priorities with a high level of organizational skills, time management, and accuracy.
  • Experience in developing videos and visuals.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to use analytical tools, e.g. Google Analytics / Google Analytics 4 (GA4), Google Search Console, CrazyEgg, social media analytics, etc. to measure success and deliver actionable recommendations.
  • Professional experience in a post-secondary institution, experience with Canvas, UX training and/or certification, and ITIL training and/or certification considered an asset.
  • Experience with content management systems (WordPress), desktop publishing software (Adobe Suite, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat), Microsoft Office, Sharepoint, and Teams, email marketing systems (Sendy or Envoke), social media platforms (Twitter), and video editing software.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines and respond to client requests.
  • Capacity for creativity and innovation and ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness, and judgment.
  • Prior communications experience in developing and coordinating digital communications projects.
  • High level of motivation and enthusiasm about contributing to the learning environment of the University.
  • Ability to effectively liaise with a central communications team to follow best practices and institutional standards.
  • Experience planning successful events for internal and external audiences, working with staff committees and volunteers where needed.
  • Exceptional writing and editing abilities and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail. Ability to compose reports, presentations, and other written materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in web content development, including content strategy, information architecture, writing for the web, user experience best practices, and search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Ability to quickly grasp technical concepts and accurately understand capabilities and constraints of new and evolving digital communications related-technologies.
