Job Summary


The Data Analyst is responsible for daily post-processing and quality assurance of track inspection systems test data. The position generates “on demand” reports and data requests from internal departments and external regulatory bodies. The incumbent interprets track data and effectively reports findings to the appropriate party, including Senior Engineering leaders. Furthermore, the role works closely with the Engineering Technology group to support existing systems with a focus on automation, improvement of reports and ensuring the quality and accuracy of field reporting. The role is also required to make field visits to develop a strong understanding of Engineering operations and provide user training and support for new and existing technologies.


Main Responsibilities Inspection Test Quality Assurance


  • Ensure data quality in key systems through audits and quality control activities
  • Oversee data received from test vehicles (e.g. processing, quality assurance, corrections, organizing)
  • Receive, compile and ensure accuracy of data
  • Liaise with Field Operators as well as Systems and Master Data groups to ensure that data quality updates are implemented accurately, work with CN and contract test vehicle operators to ensure reporting accuracy
  • Organize database of test data and create trend analysis charts and metrics


Regulatory Reporting


  • Handle ad-hoc requests from regulatory bodies as well as internal field Engineering personnel for records on inspection, reports, etc.
  • Complete data requests in a timely manner for government agencies including Transport Canada (TC) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)


Data Analysis Support to Field Employees


  • Be on call for derailment reporting
  • Assist Field team members (e.g. Track Supervisors, Senior Managers, etc.) with report interpretation and oversight on accurate and timely reporting
  • Collate and analyze complex data from multiple sources to develop actionable insights
  • Communicate findings to all levels of management
  • Participate in the development of reports in collaboration with I&T and Systems Development teams
  • Develop expertise and provide coaching on Engineering systems
  • Communicate published reports to field on a scheduled basis (daily, weekly, monthly)


Working Conditions


The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work overnight and weekends when necessary. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. The role requires minimal travel (10%) for site visits across Canada and the US.


Requirements Experience


Data Analytics and Reporting


  • Railway operations and engineering experience*
  • Between 1 to 3 years of data analytics and reporting experience
  • Experience using Systems, Applications and Products (SAP), SAP Business Warehouse (BW) and Business Objects (BO) *
  • Experience using data reporting tools
  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset


Education/Certification/Designation


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Business, Accounting or Information Technology

  • Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
  • Basic knowledge of track components
  • Knowledge of engineering track standards*
  • Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft Office, including Excel
  • Knowledge of SAP, SAP BW, SAP (Plant Maintenance) PM, BO, Tableau, and PowerBI*
