Job: Curator of Canadian Art

Position profile:

Reporting directly to the Director/CEO, the Curator of Canadian Art will be responsible for managing, curating, and promoting collections, exhibitions, and programs focused on Canadian art. The Curator of Canadian Art will also play a vital role in preserving, interpreting, and showcasing Canadian artistic heritage, contributing to the cultural enrichment of communities and fostering public engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Collection Management:


  • Oversee cataloging, documentation, and inventory management of the collection.
  • Research, select, and acquire artworks for the Beaverbrook’s Canadian art collection.
  • Develop and implement collection policies and procedures.


Exhibition Planning and Execution:


  • Curate exhibitions of Canadian art, ensuring compelling and meaningful presentations.
  • Write exhibition texts, catalogue essays, and contribute to scholarly publications.
  • Collaborate with artists, collectors, and other professionals to develop exhibition themes and interpretive materials.
  • Plan exhibition layouts and oversee installation processes.


Educational Programming:


  • Deliver lectures, talks, and presentations on Canadian art topics.
  • Engage with the public and educational institutions to promote understanding and appreciation of Canadian art.
  • Work with the Beaverbrook’s education and public programs department to develop educational programs, workshops, and tours related to Canadian art.

Research and Scholarship:


  • Contribute to academic conferences, symposia, and publications.
  • Stay abreast of current trends, developments, and scholarship in Canadian art.
  • Conduct scholarly research on Canadian art and contribute to the understanding of its historical and contemporary contexts.


Conservation and Preservation:


  • Monitor environmental conditions and implement appropriate measures to safeguard the collection.
  • Ensure the proper handling, storage, and conservation of the Beaverbrook’s Canadian art collection in accordance with best practices.
  • Collaborate with conservation professionals to address preservation and restoration needs.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for promoting Canadian art and engaging diverse audiences.
  • A graduate degree in Art History, and/or Museum Studies.
  • Flexibility to work weekends or evenings as needed.
  • Experience in curating exhibitions and managing collections in a museum or gallery setting.
  • Familiarity with conservation and preservation principles is desirable.
  • Fluency in both English and French is an asset.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively with artists, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to contribute to scholarship.
  • Valid Criminal Record Check, upon request.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • A valid drivers license is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian art history, artists, and artistic movements.
