As a leader in Mental Health Services, the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an innovative leader who will foster clinical excellence in the Mental Health Program. Reporting to the Manager, Mental Health, the primary role of the CNS is to advance the delivery of comprehensive recovery-focused evidence-based care. The CNS will have advanced knowledge in the progressive care of individuals with mental health and/or addictions issues. As a clinical expert leader, consultant, mentor, educator and facilitator for team members and management, the CNS will function as an advanced practitioner to assist to plan care for individuals who are experiencing a mental illness and/or addictions issue.


Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team including nurses, psychiatrists, allied health professionals and other healthcare providers, the CNS will be utilized in all facets of mental health care at CMH. Working as a consultative role with other Hospital services, the CNS will ensure that the focus of patient care for these areas remains recovery focused and evidence-based. The CNS will achieve goals through close collaboration with leadership teams. The CNS will demonstrate accountability by


  • Participating in identifying and coordinating mental health & addictions research opportunities and dissemination.
  • Creating opportunities for integrating research into practice.
  • Looking for opportunities to show case our “best practice” initiatives.The physical demands of the role may include but are not limited to prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling. This position contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Ensuring planning and evaluation processes to support safe, effective, and quality programs and services.
  • Leading the development, implementation and compliance of practice standards and clinical guidelines that support safety, “best practice” and evidence based care.
  • Planning, implementing, maintaining and monitoring appropriate databases for outcome management.
  • Providing consultation to support and mentor staff in supportive, patient focused care.
  • Collaborating closely with the physician and management teams to facilitate ongoing innovative initiatives across the LHIN community.


Skills and Qualifications


  • Advanced leadership skills with a minimum of 3-5 years demonstrated advanced mental health expertise required.
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing required.
  • Advanced knowledge in developing, implementing and evaluating computer based patient care processes required.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills required.
  • Experience caring for mental health patients from young adults to seniors.
  • Canadian Nursing Certification (CNA) in Psychiatric Nursing required
  • Current knowledge of psychotropic medications and symptom management.
  • Experience in and or understanding of nursing research, program planning and evaluation methodology required.
  • Demonstrated transformational leadership, team facilitation and effective communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Membership with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario required.
  • Proven organizational, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.
  • Comprehensive experience in crisis intervention, de-escalation and management of challenging behaviours required.
  • Strong understanding of treatment modalities related to dual diagnosis, concurrent disorders and withdrawal management required.
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required.
  • Strong commitment to recovery principles and patient centered care.
  • BCLS required.
  • Masters preparation in nursing/clinical health sciences essential or willingness to obtain in an agreed to timeframe.
  • Advanced knowledge in clinical health research and evidence based curriculum development.
