Position Description:Beach Clean-up Manager
Work Options:Hybrid: Surfrider Canada Office and/or Remote

Salary Range:$60,000.00 - $67,000.00

Position Summary:Bring your passion for the coastal environment and strong planning skills to this exciting opportunity to grow Surfrider Canada’s beach clean-up program in BC.
Surfrider Foundation Canada (SFC), as an affiliate of the Surfrider Foundation, is responsible for implementing the Surfrider mission in Canada. SFC supports the network of community chapters and student clubs present in Canada, providing the administrative tools and operational expertise needed for our network to perform environmental programs and advocacy-based campaigns focused on a variety of issues facing the marine environment.
SFC chapters and clubs have been leaders in British Columbia with regard to performing shoreline clean-ups, hosting an average of 50 events across the province each year. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Beach Clean-up Manager will integrate the various clean-up activities occurring across the network into one provincial clean-up program that will enhance the coordination, impact, and volunteer engagement of these events.
Position Requirements:
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with chapter/club volunteers to establish the annual beach clean-up event calendar across the network.
- Procure necessary equipment, supplies and outreach materials needed for chapter/club beach clean-up activities.
- Establish and implement a unique SFC data collection program for tracking the results of beach clean-up activity across the network.
- Develop and implement a corporate clean-up program for businesses.
- Apply for grants and perform other fundraising activity that supports the beach clean-up program.
Operational:
- Include Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategic planning into clean-up operations.
- Liaise with partners and solidify clean up collaborations.
- Supports chapter/club volunteer clean-up leads with all elements of beach clean-up coordination, administration, and execution of clean-ups.
- Meet with chapter/club campaign committees to ensure beach clean data is being leveraged towards initiatives and policy work.
- Main staff responsible for tracking beach clean content, such as performance metric data, media content and other highlights.
- Maintenance and replacement of beach clean equipment and materials alongside volunteers.
- Work with Ocean Legacy Foundation to coordinate debris end of life and processing at the Ocean Plastic Depot.
Administration & Finance
- Writes project reports proficiently and on time.
- Collect and input beach clean data, maintain a database for campaign and legislative resources (debris, locations), and report data through various channels to advocate for policy change.
- Reports on beach clean-up program progress to partners.
- Sustain and develop local partnerships and economy for responsible end of life waste management.
- Meets with Executive Director once a month to go over beach clean-up program income and expenses and ensure this is updated and integrated with budget and reports.
- Gain permissions and/or permits from First Nations, park agencies, municipalities, and partner organisations.
- Ensure insurance requirements are met via our internal event approval process.
- Manages and monitors clean-up program budget alongside Executive Director.
- General office administration, including contracts and event insurance applications.
- Seeks and writes grants to support campaigns, programs, operations, and staff positions.
Media and Marketing
- Supports social media volunteer(s) and ensures they have the information necessary to be posting impactful content regularly.
- Develop and share relevant and impactful content across all communication platforms.
- Updating the website and newsletter with beach clean-up content and stories
- Develop educational resources about clean-ups, including posters, presentations, brochures, etc.
- Provide content about beach clean-ups - including blogs, data, photos, and anecdotes for storytelling.
- Supports graphic design work and photography where desired and needed.
Education and Experience
- Diploma in a related discipline and two (2) years’ *directly related experience.
- Degree in environmental studies, resource management, applied science/natural sciences, public administration, communications, or equivalent and one (1) year *directly related experience; OR
*Directly related experience includes one (1) or more of the following:
- Ability to prioritize and demonstrate flexibility when handling multiple projects.
- Administrative experience (Google Suite, MS Office, Canva).
- Passionate about ocean and coastal protection.
- Knowledge and understanding of ocean and environmental justice issues.
- Event coordination experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Organizational and communication skills, including writing skills.
*In addition to the mandatory requirements above,preference may also be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
- Experiencer in social media
- Flexible schedule; available for some weeknight meetings and weekend events.
- Personal transport is a plus.
- Experience in volunteer coordination
