Job Description
We are looking for an enthusiastic articling student to provide services to low income individuals and groups in areas of clinic law, but primarily in the areas of social assistance and housing law.


Duties And Responsibilities


Casework


  • Provide summary advice, brief services, and casework under the supervision of a lawyer in areas of clinic law, with a focus on supporting social assistance and housing case files.


Law Reform, Community Organizing


  • Monitor policy changes, government initiatives, research studies, reports etc. on clinic law related matters that have an impact on, and implications for, our client community
  • Represent the Clinic to community groups as required
  • Support law reform and community organizing initiatives in collaboration with SCLS staff


Public Legal Education


  • Speak to community agencies and community members on clinic law issues and clinic services
  • Write, edit, and review clinic produced PLE materials as requested by the Executive Director


Qualifications And Experience


  • You have an LL.B or JD degree.
  • The ability to speak a second language is an asset.
  • You have a demonstrated interest in social justice and working for positive social change.
  • Experience in social assistance or housing law is an asset.
  • You are a student in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario eligible to enter the LSO Articling process.
  • Experience in poverty law is an asset.
  • You have the strong communication and interpersonal skills that are needed to address the needs of clients from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds.
  • You have a collaborative work approach and the ability to work well in a team based environment.
  • You have excellent writing and communication skills.


Terms of Employment


  • Anticipated start date is August 8, 2023.
  • This is a 10 month contract.
  • The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $62,500 per annum prorated to 10 months.
