We care about our communities, we care about each other, and we care about showing up for those who need us. We never break a promise, and we have the courage to do the right thing, even when it’s hard. We take pride in holding ourselves to the highest standard of integrity and excellence in all that we do.

Do you have a spark for electrical engineering? Are you inquisitive and possess an interest in innovative technology, especially in metering and telecommunications? Make an impact: ATCO Electric is looking for an AMI Engineer to join our team and be part of transforming the way energy is delivered and managed.

As an AMI engineer, you will play a key role in the design, deployment, and maintenance of AMI systems. You will work with customers, other departments, vendors, and regulators to ensure AMI data is collected and transmitted reliably and efficiently. You will also participate in pilot projects, system upgrades, process improvements, and risk management activities.

This position is part of ATCO’s Grid Modernization efforts. Our team of innovators is on the frontier of utility work, paving the way for other amazing projects to come, including electric vehicles, enhancing customer experience, and more. It is an exciting challenge, and it comes with the opportunity to learn from the best and grow your skills in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate and provide information, documents and reports to internal and external customers and satisfy auditor’s requirements.
  • Ensure that new features, enhancements, and firmware are implemented correctly and tested rigorously.
  • Participate in information system projects identified for the HES & radio backhaul system and its interfaces with other systems.
  • Ensure coordination with Field Services for installation, energization, swap, and in-situ test of metering equipment. Resolve metering communication and equipment issues promptly.
  • Manage AMI meter deployment plans, communicate with field resources and streamline the asset chain.
  • Select and procure equipment, collaborate with the vendor to ensure quality and efficiency, and stay on top of technology trends.
  • Initiate and oversee pilot projects that evaluate the performance and benefits of AMI deployment across various locations and situations.
  • Review Meter Data Management, Load Settlement and other control reports identifying published data discrepancies. Coordinate resolution of any data issues.
  • Participate in review and evaluation of metering, load settlement and billing processes.
  • Participate in business continuity and disaster recovery planning. Identify key business risks and their mitigation plan for the reliability of AMI operation.
  • Support any process changes that impact the AMI data collection system. Support the development and implementation of effective work processes to reflect these changes and update the process documents.
  • Manage the maintenance and implementation of HES and endpoint firmware upgrades for hardware and software in coordination with system provider.
  • Identify, assess, and implement AMI network designs for urban and rural areas within ATCO territory.
  • Manage system maintenance and implementation of system enhancements, upgrades, and replacements.
  • Ensure that the AMI head-end system (HES, L+G Command Center), interrogates meters, collects interval, scalar, and event data, and sends to MDM (Meter Data Management) and Billing as scheduled.

Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer, P.Eng. designation or Engineer in Training receiving their P.Eng. within the next 12 months.
  • Keen Interest in metering and metering systems is required.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills with the ability to present findings clearly and professionally, both verbally as well as in written reports.
  • Interest in telecommunications is required.
  • Exceptional work ethic, with the ability to work independently and see competing priorities through to completion on time and with high quality.
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to identify and prioritize regulatory requirements, internal requests and other tasks impacting the market.
  • Position based out of Edmonton, AB.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Team player willing to help in all other aspects of work, including those outside of core responsibility.
