Job Description
Established in 1976 the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. Recognized under provincial legislation, the Institute has been conferred authority to grant certificates and diplomas. SIIT welcomes over 2400 students into our urban and community programs annually as well as serving over 6000 clients through our nine Career Centres across the province. Nature and Scope


The Administrative Assistant – Summer Student provides administrative functions while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and careful handling of highly confidential and sensitive information. As an employee of SIIT, this position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission and mandate.


General Accountability


Specific Accountabilities


The Administrative Assistant – Summer Student will have the opportunity to gain excellent experience while developing the skills necessary to be successful in their future. The summer student will have an opportunity to improve their teamwork and communication skills, as well as, their administrative skills and leadership capabilities. This position includes the following broad range of accountabilities:


  • Performing data entry, compile and organize information and material as is relates to department initiatives
  • Assisting with records management, records destruction and file maintenance - physical and electronic as well as the retention and destruction of documents
  • Answering the phone in accordance with SIIT standards; transfer calls where appropriate and take messages as required
  • Receiving, sorting, and sending mail, courier packages, and faxes
  • Coordinating all logistics of meetings including all correspondence of attendees – internal and external
  • Management of the front office which includes being responsible for opening and closing the office by following applicable procedures; as well as maintain a clean atmosphere on the main floor, lunch room, and front reception area at all times
  • Additional support as required
  • Assisting with career and life foundational program activities which may involve coordination, developmental work, and planning
  • Providing administrative support to EDCS department; handle and process documents with confidentiality and compliance
  • Greeting and interact with clients and visitors in a timely, professional and pleasant manner
  • Researching the labour market industry and assist with determining program priorities
  • Maintain regular communication with other SIIT Administrative Staff to ensure consistency in communications, SIIT practices and procedures
  • Assisting with the preparation, coordination and facilitation of workshops and events


Position Requirements: Prior experience working with Microsoft Office suite of programs is an asset. Incumbent must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation as travel may be required.

There may be some Summer Student positions that require students to meet the following criteria:


  • Ordinarily resident on reserve or in recognized communities or on community lands
  • Registered as full-time students during the preceding academic year and who intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
  • First Nations and Inuit secondary and post-secondary students aged 15 to 30 inclusive
