Job Description
John Ross & Sons is currently seeking a Yard Supervisor to join our team in Goodwood, Nova Scotia. As the largest scrap metal recycling facility in Atlantic Canada, we seek a hard-working dedicated critical thinker who keeps safety top of mind to join our team.


JOB DESCRIPTION:


The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the yard employees and ensuring operations are running efficiently. Reporting directly to the Site Owner and Operations Manager, the ideal candidate will be an exceptional leader with critical thinking and not be afraid to get their hands dirty by jumping in and helping where and when needed. Experience working with forklifts, bobcats, and other production related equipment is required.


HOURS OF WORK: Full-time. Monday to Friday, 7am-5:30pm; Saturday 7am-12pm.


The role requires working outside in all weather conditions, with significant walking and moderate physical activity for large parts of the day. Other essential job functions include:


  • Maintain recycling yard and site organization.
  • Ensure compliance of all employees with safety requirements, instructions, and best work practices.
  • Responsible for assessing the day-to-day needs of the yard/site employees and communicating with dispatch,
  • Assign resources; employees, equipment and supplies to increase efficiency and productivity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work with the Owner and Operations Manager to ensure proper staffing and training is in place to support on-going operations of the organization.
  • Train and direct employees in proper use of site equipment (forklift, bobcat, excavator);
  • Provide leadership and direction to improve safety and ensure safe work practices are implemented to address risks.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:


  • Three plus years’ experience of staff management, development, and planning.
  • Must have effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Three plus years’ experience in the scrap metal industry is an asset.
  • Experience operating forklifts, bobcats, and other heavy equipment is required.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Must have excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to find suitable solutions for productivity, environmental, safety-related, and employment issues.
