Job Description
Support Staff Full-time New Position
(First consideration for Support Staff and Academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective Collective Agreements)
We require qualified individuals to join the Library & Learning Services team to deliver professional tutoring services for writing and reading skills and contribute to the academic success of a broad range of students. The consultant integrates student learning needs into the delivery of writing-related instruction and information. Service will be delivered during individual and group appointments, drop-ins, and workshops, both in-person and through the use of virtual platforms. Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with three (3) days on-site, and two (2) days remote.
Responsibilities
  • Assessing, identifying, and communicating writing issue areas in individual and group appointments
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of service delivery, identifying key issues, and targeting continuous improvements
  • Contributing to Writing Services data collection and reporting processes
  • Participating in relevant meetings and actively contributing to Writing and Library Services teams, project teams, and internal and external committees
  • Monitoring trends and patterns in service delivery
  • Preparing reports as requested by the Manager
  • Participating in the planning and execution of Library and Writing Services and Conestoga College events
  • Instructing students on the appropriate principles, procedures, and/or methods of writing, using delivery methods specific to the student's unique learning strengths and challenges
  • Providing students with appropriate resources and materials for independent study
  • Providing appropriate information and individualized and/or group feedback to allow students to understand how to improve their writing
  • Providing subject matter training to others as requested by the Manager
  • Developing, organizing, and facilitating classroom and co-curricular experiential workshops for programs, schools, the general student population, students transitioning into postsecondary education, and faculty and staff
  • Staying current on writing and reading instruction best practices
  • Liaising with faculty, Library Services, Accessibility Advisors, Learning Consultants, Student Success Services team members, and other college personnel
  • Providing student support by booking writing appointments and monitoring online booking system to ensure efficient use of resources
  • Developing and facilitating classroom and co-curricular experiential workshops for programs, schools, the general student population, and students transitioning into postsecondary education and faculty/staff
  • Facilitating appropriate connections and referrals to support student issues beyond writing skills (e.g., personal concerns, other academic concerns, career concerns, barriers to learning and participation, etc.)
  • Maintaining accurate and timely contact/service records
Qualifications
  • Well-versed in APA, Chicago/Turabian, and IEEE styles
  • Ability to work as part of a team serving the writing needs of a multi-cultural, diverse student body
  • Two years of demonstrated experience teaching/tutoring writing, including assisting English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners with writing skills
  • TESL Ontario Certification or equivalent is considered an asset
  • Basic understanding of and ability to informally screen for learning needs/preferences and/or learning disabilities, and to match instruction to these needs
  • Ability to change instruction style based on the culture and language of the student and on individual learning needs/preferences
  • Ability to clearly define boundaries of academic integrity and plagiarism
  • Demonstrated listening, coaching, and facilitation skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and teaching skills with sensitivity to student’s learning, language, and emotional barriers
  • Knowledge of grammar, academic essay, report writing, and referencing styles
  • Ability to clearly define boundaries of academic integrity, plagiarism, and authorship
  • Basic understanding of the structural differences between other languages and English to assist ESL students
  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Linguistics, Education, or other related field
  • Access to a reliable mode of transportation for travel between campuses is required
  • Understanding of second language learning and knowledge of conventions used to teach language
