Position Title: Vision Rehabilitation Specialist


Location: Halifax, NS


Reports To: Provincial Manager, Healthcare Operations


Term: Full Time, Permanent


Date: 28th June, 2023


I. Scope And Summary Of Primary Responsibilities


This role covers a broad range of duties and responsibilities including providing instruction and guidance in compensatory independent living skills, and assistive technology, enabling individuals living with vision loss to independently carry out daily activities.


II. Essential Functions


This position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:


  • Assists individuals in the acquisition and use of assistive devices.
  • Maintains all case data and documentation consistent with Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada Systems and Procedures.
  • Assesses the independent living needs and abilities of individuals.
  • Provides consultation, public education, and in-service training.
  • Promotes self-advocacy skills for individuals living with vision loss to access community programs and resources (i.e. leisure programs, acquisition of adaptive equipment, etc.).
  • Maintaining, facilitating, and conducting group sessions and presentations.
  • Teaches adaptive skills for independent living in areas of personal management, household management, communication, leisure activities, basic indoor orientation & mobility skills, and basic technology training.
  • With the individual, identifies and prioritizes goals, and develops an independent living plan.
  • Performs administrative duties including, but not limited to service tracking, benchmarking, report writing, etc.


Relationships


  • Assists with the training, placement and supervision of volunteers and students.
  • Promotes an understanding and awareness of vision health related issues through consultation, public education, and in-service training.
  • Attends and participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
  • Liaises and builds relationships with community-based rehabilitation teams, agencies, schools, partners, health practitioners and stakeholders.
  • Provides support and consultation to individuals and their families re adjustment to vision loss.


Problem Solving/Time Frame of Impact


  • Ability to creatively and quickly problem solve to respond to unique individual needs.
  • Provide timely delivery of services to ensure people living with vision loss acquire skills and assistive technology to remain/regain independence.


Decision Autonomy


  • Utilizes judgment when determining if the individual requires a referral to another CNIB service or external services.
  • Utilizes standard procedures and processes to implement each individual’s unique independent living plan.


Leadership


  • Takes initiative to keep abreast of knowledge in the expertise of vision rehabilitation/independent living skills.
  • Provides leadership to community groups and partners by educating, advocating and promoting awareness about vision loss.
  • Facilitate and enhance team efforts on a professional level and share specialized knowledge, sources, experience, concepts, and skills.
  • Provides leadership in training and coaching volunteers, students and staff.

  • Mature and professional attitude.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to travel within the province to deliver community-based services.
  • Self-directed, organized and detail oriented.
  • Demonstrated individual centred approach and commitment.
  • Knowledgeable about disabilities and all life stages (children to seniors).
  • Knowledge and experience working with adaptive technology.
  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with vision loss an asset.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving ability


Experience And Education


  • Good command of relevant computer applications.
  • Eligible for Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada ILS training.
  • Eligible for ACVREP Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT) certification.
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent in related field (Occupational Therapy).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Graduate of the Instructor for Blind and Visually Impaired Program (Mohawk College); or Diploma in Specialized Studies, Vision Rehabilitation (University of Montreal) an asset.


Work Environment


  • Travel will be required.
  • Service will be provided in our centers, individual homes and/or the community.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
