Reporting to the Field Area Manager, the Substation Commissioning Technologist is responsible to commission and test primary and secondary power equipment in the field. Under this role the Substation Commissioning Technologist is also responsible to commission, test and maintain medium to high-voltage substation power delivery equipment including breakers, switch gears, circuit breakers, relays and transformers.
The Substation Commissioning Technologist will also mentor and educate Apprentices including reading and interpreting blueprints, Risk Management and industry best practices. The Substation Commissioning Technologist also plays a leading role in setting up and operating standard, and specialized test equipment, to diagnose and analyze the performance of power delivery equipment on the job site.
This position is located in our Halifax, NS, office.

What You will Be Working On
- Work safely alongside all members of the construction crew.
- Work with high voltage equipment such as Circuit breakers, transformers, switches and control circuits for protection, indication and monitoring systems.
- Acceptance and maintenance testing of outdoor apparatus.
- Utility protection and control equipment that are to be installed, commissioned and operated in transmission substations.
- Analyze test reports and recommend corrective actions.
- Calibrate electronic equipment and instruments, when needed.
- Able to supervise, mentor and train junior technicians.
- Commissioning of protection and control schemes.
- Required project experience:
- Field Testing: 5 years
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Field Testing and Commissioning
- Demonstrate a willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace
- Willing to work out of town and on rotation
- Experience in substations preferred (i.e., 13.8kV and 240kV)
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines
- Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and have a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Past supervisory experience would be an asset
- Past experience with testing software will be beneficial
- Familiar with all apparatus’ found in a HV substation
- Competent and comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets
- Commissioning: 5 years
- Able to work alone or with minimal supervision
- Experience with relay testing with various equipment; Omicron, GE, Manta, Meggar
- Substations: 5 years
- Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution or Degree in Electrical Engineering
- High Voltage: Minimum 5 years’ experience required
- Able to work comfortably at heights
