Job Description
Storyboard Department Head
We are on the search for an experienced Storyboard Supervisor to head up Storyboard department, and join our team of talented artists in Ottawa!
This senior-level position is an excellent opportunity to work on an exciting projects with one of the most respected animation studios in the industry.
Job Responsibilities
  • Hold a position of leadership, overseeing the creative process of developing storyboards of various projects.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the quality of storyboards is up to standards expected by the company and its clients.
  • Work closely with Talent Management to identify new potential storyboard artists.
  • Support the directors in story-telling and work closely with production to ensure storyboards are feasible within the scopes dictated by schedule and budget.
  • Drive the story room with stakeholders for every project.
  • Support the storyboard team‘s growth and the skill development.
  • Is responsible for the high-end quality of storyboards provided by the overall department.
  • Provide workflow and methodology to ensure storyboards are executed correctly according to the MFW’s standards.
  • Ensure the storyboard artists work collaboratively with other members of the production team, including directors, writers, and designer/animators.
  • Manage the entire team of storyboard (supervisors, storyboard artists, revisionists) and provide guidance, support and feedback to ensure that the team is working effectively and efficiently.
  • Work closely with Directors, editors, production team, Director of production and Dept Heads.
  • Set the creative direction and vision for the storyboard process and work closely with the team to ensure the storyboards are aligned with the creative direction for the project.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Communicate progress of work to creative supervisors and to appropriate production staff.
  • Attend edit reviews and provide storyboarding solutions to address Client comments on animatic with the Director and delegate revisions to revisionists
  • Responsible for generating new panels and executing board revisions if time is available, otherwise delegate revisions to revisionists.
  • Oversee delivery of STB elements to Edit team for animatic launch
  • Must have a good mix of aesthetic sensibilities and technical experience in 2D animated series production.
  • Communicate expectations to revisionists and freelance storyboard artists effectively by providing notes and support teams where needed
  • Foster an atmosphere of cooperation and communication.
  • Maintain production schedule and warn production team if deadlines are not achievable and propose solutions to production to meet deadlines/address workload.
  • Launch storyboards with Storyboard Artists and Director
  • Review boards from Storyboard Artists and with Director and provide STB artists with revision notes in storyboard pro
  • Be a leader within the Storyboard team to mentor and inspire revisionists to help them improve in their work so that they can become more autonomous and deliver to the expectations
  • Help manage stress levels within the storyboard creative team by being a cool cucumber, a duck above water.
Skills & Qualifications
  • 5-8 years of experience in the role
  • Able to prioritize appropriately and meet deadlines
  • Professional and positive attitude
  • Knowledge of StoryboardPro
  • Strong communication skills; verbal, nonverbal, and written
  • Strong problem-solving skills, both creatively and logistically
  • Well-developed drawing, animation & comedic timing, and composition skills
  • Able to manage team / Experience in managing others
  • Knowledge of 2D animation techniques and pipeline
