Shipping Monitor Jobs

**Mission for this Position**

Report directly to the Environmental Communications Lead and work closely with the Baffinland Community Liaison Officer (BLCO), Inuit Knowledge Holder and Community Resource Guide (CRG) in Pond Inlet to support the daily functions associated with tracking shipping activities associated with Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (Baffinland) along its shipping route from Pond Inlet to Milne Inlet, and provide liaison between the community of Pond Inlet, the Mittimatalik Hunter and Trappers Organization, and Baffinland.

**Main Accountabilities**

• Implement Pond Inlet-based components of Baffinland’s Shipping Communications Protocol, particularly with regards to informing hunters and community members about vessel traffic;
• Answer incoming phone/radio calls, emails, and faxes and relay these incoming messages to the appropriate person at Baffinland;
• Conduct ad-hoc visual observations including note/photo-taking of general daily vessel activity and marine wildlife from the shores of Pond Inlet;
• Act as the primary liaison between the community of Pond Inlet and Baffinland to discuss and/or resolve potential community concerns related to Baffinland shipping and Inuit harvesting;
• Provide information to community members upon request on Baffinland’s existing shipping mitigation and management measures;
• Compile data and prepare daily reports on shipping activity, visitors, concerns and marine wildlife observations;
• Observe and monitor the route of Vessels contracted by Baffinland travelling to and from Milne Port using an online computer software, exactEarth Automated Information System (AIS);
• Using communication information provided by Baffinland, share shipping updates on local radio and marine VHF radio to inform residents/hunters of Pond Inlet on Baffinland Vessel activity; and
• Prepare end-of-year summary report on shipping activities/marine wildlife observations and associated communications
• Observe and document general vessel activity in Pond Inlet (e.g., cruise ships, research vessels, sea lift and fuel freight);
• Attend community-based information sessions, as needed.
• Maintain the minimum core office hours of 8am to 5pm, and up to 24-hour coverage during busy vessel activities;

• Working a schedule to cover day, evening and/or night shifts may be required during higher levels of vessel activity
• Ability to use standard computer office software such as Microsoft Word and Excel
• Available to work and reside in Pond Inlet over the entire shipping season (July 1 – November 1, 2023) over scheduled days.
• Ability to speak, read and write in English, and speak in Inuktitut
• Demonstrated use of computers including data entry and tracking, ease of working with the public, and summarizing information for public.
• Experience in using marine VHF marine or local radio preferred
• High School Diploma required
• Highly organized and attentive to detail;
