We are seeking a Sheet Metal Estimator to join the team in Toronto. As the Sheet Metal Estimator, you will work within the team to prepare for, assemble and submit tender prices for various projects of all sizes and scope. The Estimator will be responsible to prepare, record and maintain pricing and assist the management team in the ongoing pursuit and acquisition of construction projects. Through the development of the estimate, the Estimator sets the basis for the projects teams’ success by breaking the project into logical areas with labour and cost breakdowns. The estimator is responsible for the turnover of this information to the project execution team when Modern is successful in their bid.


Duties And Responsibilities


  • Present bid package with tender price for clients following their specifications.
  • Calculate a final figure for the estimated cost, supplemented by adjustments for overheads a profit.
  • Assists in the development of estimating plan to establish estimate/proposal strategies.
  • Participates in presentation of estimates/proposals to senior management.
  • Attends and participates in site-visits, pre-bid meeting and post-bid meeting as required.
  • Works diligently daily to achieving the group sales targets for the year.
  • Performing quantity takeoffs including entry into the computer estimating system.
  • Provides input for determining bid strategies and preparing bids.
  • Preparing bid forms and submissions for a tender call or proposal.
  • Provides detailed labor breakdowns for each area to assist with budget creation and management of project.
  • Understanding the labor variances between project types and apply appropriate correction factors.
  • Reviewing all bid documents to ensure all bid requirements are met.
  • Applies technical experience to interpret documentation, specifications, and design drawings.
  • Assemble all elements of an estimate including labour, material, equipment and subcontractor pricing.
  • Manage multiple estimates at the same time.


Job Requirements


  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and computerized scheduling packages.
  • Post-secondary diploma in mechanical or construction technology or other relevant technology field or extensive experience in a mechanical contracting trade. Eng or CET considered an asset or equivalent experience in the field.
  • Ability to work in a multi-trade environment with a high degree of interaction between management, estimation and field resources
  • Client service and customer focus to establish and maintain effective relationships with customers.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Hands on experience preparing all classes of estimates from conceptual to definitive as well as preparing financial and statistical analyses.
  • Understanding of SMACNA and Sheet Metal Construction Standards and ability to identify conflicts on drawings during the estimate phase of the project
  • Self-motivated with strong willingness and ability to learn and be challenged
  • Works effectively in team environment
  • 5 years of extensive, practical and successful experience in organizing and preparing cost estimates and proposals for construction projects working in both the subcontractor and prime contractor capacity
  • Understanding of all facets of the construction process.
  • Experience in the South Western Ontario market will be considered an asset
  • Applies advanced technical experience/knowledge to interpret documentation, specifications, and design drawings.
  • Knowledge of construction costs and budgets.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting construction drawings and documents.
  • Ability to calculate mathematical extensions, analyze and understand construction drawings, associated documentation, contracts, cost coding systems and work breakdown structures.
