The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a regulated health care professional who is accountable and responsible for providing quality patient focused nursing care to patients who are identified as less complex, demonstrate more predictable outcomes and are at lower risk for negative outcomes in pre and post operative care. As part of the inter-professional health care team, the RPN will practice according to the nursing practice expectations set by Osler, the regulatory practice standards of the College of Nurses and the legislative requirements set by the Regulated Health Professions Act.
Accountabilities:
- Safe nursing practice in all aspects of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care
- Providing care in a compassionate and caring manner within a diverse cultural environment
- Practicing according to the infection control and prevention measures
- Providing health teaching to patients and families including thorough discharge instructions to ensure the continuity of care in the community
- Responding to emergency situations by recognizing changes in patient's health status and consulting appropriately when necessary using transfer of accountability principles
- Professional, patient-centred care to ensure patient safety and physiological and psychological well-being during and after any ambulatory care procedures including arthroscopy, gynecology, cystoscopy, endoscopy or cataract
- Must be able to respond to on call within 30 minutes
- Must be able to wear lead apron and standing for long periods of time
- Knowledge of Operating Room Nurses Association of Canadaof standards of practice
- Recent experience within the last fiveyearswith a minimum of twoyears of operating room experience required
- Operating Room certificate

- Demonstrated experience with patient and family health teaching
- CPR-HCP
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an inter-professional team
- Current registration, and in good standing, with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Must demonstrate Osler's Values of Respect, Excellence, Service, Compassion, Innovation and Collaboration
- Sound knowledge of nursing process, theoryand responsibilities to the nursing profession and must be able to work to the full scope of practice of a Registered Practical Nurse
- Demonstrated knowledge of patient and family-centred care
- Ability to promote a healthy work environment and practice excellent client safety guidelines
- Medication Administration certificate and Patient Assessment course required for RPNs graduating prior to 2005 (certificates must be submitted with applications and prior to the interview phase)
- Ability to learn and work with information systems/technology
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment
- Knowledge, understanding and compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Demonstrated leadership and facilitationskills
- May be required to travel and work between all Osler sites
- Excellent attendance, punctuality and work record
- Exemplary clinical practice within an inter-professional team to develop appropriate strategies for patient care
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, conflict-resolution and decision-making skills required
Hours: Currently weekdays and weekends (8 hour days, evenings with night call) (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
Salary:
Minimum: $29.40 per hour
Maximum: $31.79 per hour
