Location: Toronto, Canada

Thales provides world-leading Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and interlocking for mass rail transit applications globally. The Centre of Competence for Urban Rail Signalling is located right before you at mid-town Toronto. As the largest office in Canada, we house a department for every step of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)! This includes Software, Hardware, Systems Design, Verification & Validation, Operations, etc. The supporting corporate shared services teams in Finance, Human Resources and IT is also located at the office. We are looking for a Railway Signaling Hardware Designer to produce application designs and equipment designs that meet requirements utilizing processes based on established engineering principles.


Key Responsibilities:


TECHNICAL SKILLS:


  • Maximizing use of existing design
  • Proficient with the use of development tools, CAD packages (MicroStation, AutoCAD)
  • Demonstrating a high degree of initiative, and resourcefulness in solving problems
  • Good understanding of SelTrac signal plans and SelTrac Radio equipment
  • Selecting an appropriate design approach
  • Demonstrating an advanced level of logical reasoning resulting in effective hardware application designs, products and processes
  • Preparing specifications for hardware and/or software components
  • Interpreting and the ability to write Requirements


MANAGEMENT SKILLS:


  • Manage assigned tasks, schedule and budget
  • When required, lead a small team of designers (1 to 5 designers)
  • Carry out all assigned work efficiently, with minimal supervision
  • Generating accurate, supportable estimates for current departmental technology and providing estimates for technologies that are new to the department
  • Manage work packages of at least 3 to 4 active projects
  • Ensuring that all tasks proceed according to schedule, within budget, and in accordance with all requirements
  • Verify that all assigned work has been completed accurately and on time
  • Keeping track of progress on all tasks assigned to the team


COMMUNICATION SKILLS:


  • Good interpersonal and diplomatic skills to deal confidently, courteously, and correctly with people at any level within the organization, and the customer
  • Well-developed writing skills to prepare clear effective documents
  • Well-developed verbal skills to interact effectively and professionally in a variety of forums


Required Skills and Experience:


  • Good interpersonal and technical writing skills
  • Post-secondary Technologist diploma or Electrical/Electronics Engineering degree
  • Computer literate with knowledge of CAD tools (MicroStation, AutoCAD), Bills of Materials, (SAP), Configuration Management, Thales (ClearQuest), and Microsoft Office suite
  • 5-8 years related work experience


Preferred Skills and Experience:


  • Possesses Thales CMS Designer or Principles Licence


SOFT SKILLS:


  • Intimate understanding of Thales Work Instructions and the QMS process
  • Maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the job and in relations with others
  • Mentor junior or new members of the department
  • Knowledge of Chorus and shared Palma process is an asset
  • Ability to work in a team environment


APTITUDE:


  • Making timely decisions, both independently and in concert with others
  • Locating and researching source documentation for design activities
  • Identify problems or inefficiencies in the department’s operation and suggest improvements
