Job Description

Company Description

NS Nanotech, Inc., founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2017, incorporated NS Nanotech Canada in November 2022. Senior researchers from NS Nanotech Canada will collaborate with McGill University scientists to accelerate the company’s ongoing nanoLED research. In Michigan, NS Nanotech has a prototype production facility to develop nitride semiconductors for UVC disinfection applications. It also holds exclusive licenses to a portfolio of nanoLED patents held by McGill University and the University of Michigan, actively collaborating with researchers there on development of its nanoLED technologies.

We are seeking a talented and motivated process engineer to operate and assist in maintaining molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) systems used for the development of NS Nanotech’s light emitting devices. The ideal candidate would have experience with vacuum systems, thin-film deposition techniques and microfabrication. Hands-on industrial experience with calibrating, maintaining and troubleshooting such equipment would be highly desired for this position. As part of a small start-up company, the candidate will be directly working with the senior scientist leading the epitaxy efforts at NS Nanotech Canada. This is a hands-on, experimental role, perfect for someone who likes to roll up their sleeves and make things work

Responsibilities

  • Exhibit and mandate safe working and housekeeping practices.
  • Calibrate the equipment based on established standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Prepare and clean substrates pre-growth.
  • Log process runs, keep track of samples and document experiments properly.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of sub-components.
  • Assist during full system maintenances.
  • Coordinate with the technical and management teams, as necessary.
  • Unload samples and perform post-growth characterization.
  • Operate MBE systems and run growth recipes.

Position Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Experience working with hand tools.
  • Direct experience working with vacuum systems, thin-film deposition, microfabrication and/or epitaxy systems.
  • Ability to work in a lab facility, including being comfortable with wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to manipulate small samples and their handling with tweezers.
  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19, as defined by Health Canada.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or similar.
  • Work eligibility in Canada.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
  • 2+ years of experience in an industrial setting.
  • Experience handling semiconductor samples.
  • Ability to routinely handle objects weighing up to 25 lbs and on occasion to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Available for immediate full-time work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in semiconductors and optoelectronics.
  • Strong technical communications skills.
  • Experience working with high-purity gases and source materials.
  • Experience working in a cleanroom.
  • 4+ years of experience in an industrial environment.
  • Willingness to travel to the United States on occasion.
  • Experience with calibrating, maintaining and troubleshooting vacuum systems and/or thin-film deposition equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts.
  • Experience with metrology techniques to characterize semiconductor materials.
  • Written and verbal communication skills in French.
  • Experience sourcing custom electronic and mechanical parts.
  • Familiarity of GaN-based devices.
  • Experience with electron microscopy (SEM).
  • Experience with photoluminescence measurements and LED testing.
