PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The sampler takes samples of various petroleum or chemical products. The purpose of the sampling is to obtain a representative portion of products from ships, barges and shore tanks.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Ensure that all equipment is clean and properly calibrated and that the calibration data has been recorded before any equipment can be used.
  • Always work in a safe manner and according to company and terminal procedures.
  • Communicate with Senior Petroleum Product Inspectors about work orders.
  • Learn and apply appropriate procedures associated with sampling and custody transfers.
  • Assist Senior Inspectors with vessel sampling.
  • Understand and follow terminal work order instructions for each sampling or custody transfer.
  • Identify and correctly enter all required data on sample labels.
  • Follow the Senior Inspector’s or the Laboratory Supervisor’s instructions for cleaning sample bottles, removing samples and replenishing shelves with new or clean bottles.
  • Various special or ad hoc projects could be assigned on occasion.
  • Clean and maintain inspection equipment.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of workstations, equipment rooms, locker rooms and inspection rooms.
  • Read and review available API/ASTM procedures and manuals related to our business line.
  • Ensure that all relevant data is correctly recorded in documents or files.
  • Communicate with terminal representatives and monitor transfer activities or vessels to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Clean and maintain company trucks.
  • Sample shore-based tanks or vessels according to established procedures to obtain representative samples using various methods imposed by the company and/or ASTM or API procedures.
Qualifications
PROFILE
  • Experience: 0 to 1 year of relevant work experience required or equivalent experience through education.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Education: High School Diploma (or equivalent) is required.
Required Skills
  • The incumbent must have a minimum of a high school diploma or a high school equivalency certificate (GED).
  • Excellent math skills would be an asset.
  • Must be meticulous and punctual when performing tasks associated with petroleum sampling.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a production or manufacturing sector role.
  • Experience in a petroleum-related field would be an asset.
Demonstrated willingness to work and learn more about the marine/petroleum industry, with a focus on the quantity and quality of sampling and the monitoring of custody transfers.
  • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
  • Available to work weekends and on call 24 hours a day.
  • Travel to other SGS locations may be expected from time to time.
  • Works well under pressure.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Extended hours may be required from time to time.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours according to sample schedules (days, nights, weekends and holidays).
  • Candidates must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
