We opened our new Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre in early 2023 providing eight floors of modern and bright care spaces and will continue to transform our campus in the coming years.


The Emergency Department provides Personal Support Workers a unique opportunity to grow and utilize their skills. The MGH Emergency Department provides care for over 90,000 annually and takes pride in serving East Toronto’s diverse population. This dynamic, community oriented program has a team who are committed to learning and providing excellent patient care. You will work with a diverse, supportive interprofessional team that are welcoming and supportive of new staff.

What To Expect


As a member of the Emergency Department team, you will:


  • Perform activities directed and assigned by a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse for which appropriate education and training has been completed.
  • Support patients’ independence, dignity and well-being.
  • Participate in direct and indirect patient care activities in order to carry out the interprofessional care plan.
  • An orientation schedule tailored to the needs of the individual.
  • Be responsible for delivery of specimen to the laboratory.
  • The opportunity to work with individuals from low acuity to high acuity of care.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living and promote the provision of patient-centered care.
  • Assist in patient movement throughout the department.
  • The opportunity to work with individuals of all ages.


Education


  • Ability to speak, read, write and comprehend the English language.
  • A Personal Support Worker certificate or diploma from an accredited college.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification required.


Qualifications


  • 1 - 2 years of recent relevant work experience.
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements under MGH Privacy Policy.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent level of productivity and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development.
  • Work is moderately heavy involving lifting, considerable walking, and standing, bending, pushingand pulling of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation.
  • All employees of Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), a division of Toronto East Health Network (TEHN) [formerly Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH)] agree to work within the legislated practices of the Occupational Healthand Safety Act of Ontario.
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; patient service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity.
  • Knowledge of Hospital and departmental policies, procedures, protocols, practices and Emergency Codes.
  • Willingness to work in all areas of the health service (skills & abilities considered).
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and the willingness to work effectively in a team.
  • All employees of MGH are responsible to contribute to a transparent culture of patient and staff safety by adhering to and abiding by patient and staff safety policiesand procedures set by MGH.
  • Ability to demonstrate skill competency in a fast paced environment.
  • Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
  • All employees are accountable for protecting the psychological health and safety of themselves and their co-workers through adherence to MGH's policies and practices.
  • Ability to perform responsibilities in a courteous manner.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to foster caring and trusting relationships with patients and families in an effort to support patient focused care.
  • Recent clinical experience and/or practicum experience in a hospital setting is considered an asset.
  • Commitment to unit-specific education and other training identified as necessary to practice safely and competently on the unit
  • Good work and attendance record is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection control.
