Patent Agent
Job location: Ottawa, Canada (Hybrid); Other Canadian locations (Remote)
About The Role
The Patent Agent, as a seasoned professional with extensive experience, conducts work that contributes to the growth and protection of Kinaxis’ intellectual property portfolio.
As a member of the Kinaxis Legal team, the Patent Agent will partner with stakeholders across the business, including inventors, to mine, draft, and file patent applications. The incumbent will participate in prosecution and litigation of patent filings.
An exceptional collaborator and partner to the organization, the Patent Agent will provide strategic and practical guidance to stakeholders as it relates to our patent portfolio, and will develop internal IP best practices that are aligned to our strategic corporate objectives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with inventors to draft, file, and prosecute patent filings
  • Contribute to Kinaxis’ IP portfolio creation and development; partner with stakeholders within the Legal team to build and execute on overall IP strategy
  • Lead and contribute to the development and facilitation of IP awareness training for business units across Kinaxis, including the Product organization
  • Share IP portfolio reports and updates on a regular basis to the Patent Council
  • Develop and contribute to work products required for due diligence or patent litigation.
  • Work with outside counsel in the management of Kinaxis’ patent portfolio.
  • Participate in mining and hackathon sessions
  • Contribute to the definition, development and execution of internal IP best practices; develop and facilitate training to stakeholders and ensure process is understood and followed
What You Will Have
  • Detailed knowledge of subject-matter eligibility at the USPTO and the European Patent Office
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Patent Agent registered to practice before the CIPO and/or the USPTO.
  • An eagerness to roll up your sleeves and build something from the ground up
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong analytical, logical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Willing to learn and use RowanTel® drafting, prosecution and invention hub tools
  • Strong relationship-building and influencing skills and the ability to prioritize business requirements appropriately through a collaborative partnership approach
  • Willing to learn and use other patent analytical tools.
  • Must be able to draft and prosecute software patent applications (before the USPTO)
  • 5+ years of experience working on software patent applications filed at the USPTO and managing a patent portfolio; high-tech, global experience is an asset
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
