Why Fraser Health?

We have an exciting opportunity for two Nurse Practitioners to join our General Surgery Team at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Surrey, BC. As part of this rewarding role the NP works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team with a coordinated approach to ensure safe, quality, effective, and timely care for patients.

Bring your clinical expertise and passion for providing quality, compassionate care to a challenging and rewarding role as a Nurse Practitioner (NP). The SMH Surgery Team is a collaborative group that focuses on the management of both post operative surgical and medical care.

The inclusion of the NP into the team is of great benefit for managing this population due to their needs for integration of care across disciplines and continuity of care. The Nurse Practitioner is one of the main points of contact that builds the plan with the physicians, patients and allied team members. The NP is also integral for the family in providing consistency, support and education.

These patients have complex medical needs and will require in-patient monitoring, co-ordination of care needs, education and optimization of therapy. The NP will be working with the team which comprises of hepatobiliary specialists, including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, interventional radiology and other medical specialists. Registered nurses, social workers, Dietitian, Pharmacist are some of the other integral team members the NP will be working with for the coordinated care of these patients.

In addition, the general surgery population is quite diverse and there is opportunity to expand and to collaborate with partner NPs towards fulsome care of the entire general surgery population.

As a regional hospital for Fraser Health, as well as the home hospital for one of BC’s fastest growing communities, Surrey Memorial Hospital is the second largest hospital in the province and provides specialized care to people from across Fraser Health, not only to residents of Surrey.

Surrey is one of Canada’s fastest growing cities and its land mass makes it one of the largest cities in the province, equal to the size of Vancouver, Richmond and Burnaby combined. Known as the City of Parks, Surrey has over 6,000 acres of parkland and 15 golf courses and driving ranges. Also, despite rapid growth, Surrey has held onto the rural flavour of its past, with about 35 per cent of its land designated as agricultural and still actively farmed.

This is a great opportunity for a new Nurse Practitioner to join a well supported fellowship program to help consolidate clinical skills. Be part of our clinical enhancement program with regular in house skills development such as suturing and x-ray interpretation in addition to receiving centralized NP orientation. You will be welcomed into a New Graduate NP Community of Practice team helping to support your successful transition into independent practice.

This position will also have a new and exciting post graduate up to 6 month nurse practitioner residency program. FH is the first health authority to implement a formal residency program for NPs in the province, which will be key to supporting the development of NPs and practice-readiness in select programs. You will receive in depth in house advanced training within a clinical area relevant to the position, improve your team collaboration and develop a model of patient centred care. This is your opportunity to consolidate your nurse practitioner education with a team helping to support your successful transition into independent practice.

During your residency, you’ll receive:

  • Protected time for self directed learning relevant to your clinical practice
  • Coaching from a consistent experienced nurse practitioner throughout your residency
  • Individualized support in transitioning to independent provider
  • Mentorship in multiple clinical areas
  • Dedicated clinical supervision during clinical placements
