Job Description

Title: NGS Research Associate



Position Summary:

BGI Americas Corporation is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join its laboratory team under its Genomics Services business. This position provides an opportunity to work with cutting-edge genomics technologies and contribute to BGI Americas’ goal of advancing genomics research and improving human health. The BGIA laboratory team is looking for a detail-oriented Lab Technician to conduct NGS workflows. The successful candidate will deliver high quality data to the production teams and perform duties in a reliable and reproducible manner. The NGS technician is responsible for processing multiple sample types for the complete NGS workflow, including RNA and DNA extraction, library preparation, and sequencing. Additional responsibilities include working with a core BGIA team in the operation and maintenance of laboratory service menu and equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and executing standard work procedures on a wide range of molecular biology techniques related to Next Generation Sequencing.


Job Location: Montreal, Canada.



Major Responsibilities:

  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment to carry out laboratory tests.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Independently analyzes, interprets, records and reviews testing results.
  • Coordinate resources to accomplish development goals at a defined time and quality.
  • Performs NGS experiments according to strict methodologies, procedures, and/or protocols and makes judgment- based decisions as necessary.
  • Will utilize various manufacturing systems and applications for performing work duties, including LIMS and other proprietary software.
  • Ensure defined quality criteria for automated NGS workflows are met.
  • Evaluate new technology, execute technology transfer, continue to enhance service menu of the laboratory.
  • Implement lab quality management plan includes sample management, logistics, inventory.
  • Generates presentations about laboratory work for laboratory staff; compiles information for creating required documents and records; keeps current with technical developments especially those which can save time, lower cost, and improve reliability; devises new applications of NGS for laboratory in diagnostic or other field.
  • Implements all safety and quality assurance policies and procedures when completing work.
  • Tests out new NGS reagents in order to optimize workflow, SOPs, and available lab services.

  • Functional understanding of Operational Excellence principles, including Lean, 5S, and Kaizen, and can apply them to the workplace.



Job Requirements:

  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  • Expertise in molecular biology techniques including PCR, genotyping or sequencing; familiarity with molecular biology systems, processes and high-end analytical instrumentation.
  • Mandarin speaking skills preferred.
  • Detail oriented, excellent record keeping abilities, analytical and organizational skills; Work well in team setting.
  • BS in Life Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry). Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience in Industry, preferably having developed and transferred products to a manufacturing setting.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Familiar with high-throughput production environment; experience with liquid handling automation preferred.
  • Experience with a repertoire of techniques in molecular biology, PCR and RT-PCR is a plus.
