Job Description

Position: Manager (Flourish Cafe) Contract Length: 60 Months


Grocer 4 Good Ability Development Program is seeking a Manager to lead a project that compliments and supports the current work of Grocer 4 Good. The position is possible with the support from the Public Safety Canada Fund from the Government of Canada. This is a full-time, five year contract position with the intention that the successful candidate would become permanent.


The Candidate should have the following qualifications/level of experience:


  1. Minimum five years supervisory duties with direct staff oversight and support
  2. College and/or University completion
  3. Experience in the food service sector (including food security)
  4. Proven ability to work alongside multiple sectors (private/public/governmental) and diverse groups
  5. Experience working within project timelines and budgets
  6. Financial reporting and day-to-day business operations
  7. Ability to mentor and be a positive role model
  8. Safe Food Handling and First Aid Certificates

Project Overview: Flourish Cafe


Flourish Social Enterprise Cafe is a direct intervention project to address the lack of meaningful employment opportunities for at-risk, marginalized youth who face social barriers to employment in Sault Ste. Marie, such as youth who have disabilities or mental health issues, with an additional focus on Indigenous youth who face discriminatory factors in the community. The project and activities will act as an early intervention program for crime prevention. The target population is 16-25-year old youth in Sault Ste. Marie and the project is expected to have an intake of 28 new participants each year for a total of 140 unique participants over the 59-month project duration.


Start-Up Responsibilities

Duration: 7 months


  • Establish formal agreements/arrangements with partners for referral-making and program/service delivery; including current G4G staff and volunteers
  • Order equipment and coordinate any retrofitting for the Café
  • Based on their roles, staff will complete Café setup, test products, and develop a curriculum for target youth participants
  • Meet with community partners and stakeholders to conduct planning and project development
  • Recruitment and hiring of staff leads including: Baker/Cook and Youth Counsellor


Ongoing Day to Day Operations


  • Process schedules, payroll, banking and other bill payments as required (including processing financial information for reporting)
  • Coordinate for both social enterprises (Grocer 4 Good and Flourish Cafe) inventory needs and supplies


Direct Intervention Activities

Duration: 4 years and 4 months


  • Youth participants will be trained in day-to-day operations and tasks by the Café Manager and Cook at the start of the year, including access to Grocer 4 Good experiences
  • Youth Counsellor and Café Manager will report on participant successes through qualitative and quantitative findings such as personal testimonials, job performance
  • Monitor progress, achievements and outcomes for each participant
  • Recruit and train Café staff: conduct participant intake assessments at the start of each year of the project, determine program suitability and identify risk factors for candidates;
  • Once participants/Café staff are in place, a Grand Opening of the Café will be held in the first year of the project to create public awareness in the community
