Job Description

Humane Canada is seeking a Manager, Farmed Animal Welfare, for 6 months within our Programs Department, focusing on executing all areas of Humane Canada’s work as an animal welfare advocacy organization participating at the National Farm Animal Care Council.

Position Title:Manager, Farmed Animal Welfare

Reports to: Senior Manager, Policy & Research

Location: Canada (remote position), all meetings held online

Salary: $60,000 per annum

Benefits: Remote office, flexible hours

Position Type:Full-Time, fixed 6-month contract to December, 2023, immediate start

OVERVIEW:


Humane Canada, the federation of SPCAs and humane societies, works to end animal cruelty, improve animal protection and promote the humane treatment of all animals within Canada.


Humane Canada’s Programs Department is comprised of programs and sections, including Criminal Justice System Reform; Awareness, Collaboration and Tools (A.C.T.) for Women Experiencing Gender-based Violence; Humane Education; Accreditation; National Pet Food Bank; and Policy & Research. The Farmed Animal Welfare work falls under the mandate of the Policy section.


Humane Canada is a founding member and one of two animal welfare advocacy organizations at the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC), working constructively and diligently for positive progressive change for farmed animals.


The Manager, Farmed Animal Welfare, is responsible for Humane Canada’s participation at NFACC, including active engagement to advocate for real advances for the welfare of farmed animals within NFACC initiatives. NFACC brings together diverse stakeholders to:

  • Provide a forum for open dialogue on farm animal welfare.
  • Create a process for the development of animal care assessment programs, and
  • Develop Codes of Practice for the care and handling of farm animals,

RESPONSIBILITIES:


OVERALL

  • Manage and coordinate all aspects of Humane Canada’s participation as a key animal welfare advocacy organization at NFACC.
  • Attend NFACC Board meetings and appropriate sub-committee meetings.
  • Participate in other initiatives to advance the welfare of farmed animals as needed.
  • Engage, orient, manage and maintain close communication with Humane Canada representatives on NFACC Code development and maintenance processes, and Code assessment programs, as well as other NFACC activities as needed.
  • Communicate successes and needs, track progress, evaluate results and keep Humane Canada stakeholders informed.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with NFACC member organizations, including producer organizations and other industry stakeholders, veterinarians, enforcement, government and animal welfare partners.
  • Contribute to the execution of all activities and planning, including funding, accounting and contracts related to Humane Canada’s work with NFACC.

ORGANIZATION

  • Represent Humane Canada to other organizations, stakeholders, community at large and the media as required.
  • Work cooperatively with all members of the Management Team to ensure policy direction and key messages associated with the same are integrated and presented to funders, partners and the general public.
  • Keep Board, staff and members informed on new developments through regular reports to Senior Manager, Policy and Research and Director, National Programs.
  • Manage staff as needed.

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS:


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Successful completion of a university degree in a related field, including animal welfare, animal sciences, public policy/administration; 4- 6 years’ work experience in a related management position.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Experience with not-for-profit governance; first-hand experience participating on boards is an asset.
  • Good knowledge about the Canadian animal agriculture industry sector; work experience within the sector an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate with third party consultants.
  • Experience in program and project management working with remote teams.
  • Self-starter, possessing a positive, forward thinking entrepreneurial approach to all areas of work.
  • English is essential; bilingual (English/French) an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders, build partnerships, actively listen and respond to stakeholder feedback and find solutions that accommodate diverse interests.
  • Strong strategic and operational skills, with the ability to work in a highly collaborative, consultative environment with other staff and volunteers.
  • Resourceful and organized; able to manage competing priorities, complex situations and deadlines while establishing and executing long-term plans, leveraging immediate opportunities and managing short-term objectives.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, principles and values espoused by Humane Canada
  • In depth knowledge of farmed animal welfare issues in Canada.

Remote nature of position:

  • Day-to-day operations of this role are remote. The successful candidate would be required to perform responsibilities reliably and effectively through the use of technology.
  • Will require use of candidate’s own personal technology (phone, computer,printer, etc.) for the duration of the contract.
  • May need to work to some difficult deadlines and manage and respond to competingpriorities.
  • May be required to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Working hours are flexible, but availability will be generally required between 9 am and 5 pm ET (Eastern Time Zone).
  • Availability to travel for role within Canada, as required.
