About the Role

The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for the assisted planning and the execution of experiments to support Virica’s service level agreements and internal product development and research and development activities. Additional responsibilities include, supporting daily laboratory operations and maintenance, development of SOPs and development of scientific communication materials (whitepapers, publications, conference material) and client-based technical interaction/communication.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the development of Virica specific SOPs, conference material, technical reports, whitepapers, publications
  • Contributes to client technical support, including assisting with external client-facing meetings and the preparation of external technical documents (e.g., Statements of Work and Budgets and Instruction/Guidance for VSE use).
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and the proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Assists with planning and executing experiments, performing calculations, data interpretation, accurate and complete data entry into ELN, and the effective communication of results.
  • Performs routine laboratory procedures, including quality control processes, inventory tracking and procurement, basic equipment, and workspace maintenance, and shipping/receiving.


Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • This individual must possess a high level of technical accuracy and attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to execute multiple experiments and projects at once.
  • Education: degree in life sciences, B.Sc minimum
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting (2 or more years, an asset).
  • Strong and effective communication and writing skills.


Asset Qualifications/skills:

  • Experience with the generation, characterization, enumeration of viruses and/or viral vectors
  • Experience with laboratory automation workflows (liquid handling robots)
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique(s)
  • Experience with molecular and analytical laboratory methods (e.g. plaque assay, DNA extractions and qPCR, ELISA).
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with high-throughput methodologies
  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DoE) software
  • Experience in Upstream and Downstream process development for viral vectors


Working Conditions:

The successful candidate will be required to work at the Virica laboratory in Ottawa, Ontario, in addition to available office space, or at such other locations as may be mutually agreeable. The Employee shall supply their own mobile phone. Virica will provide a laptop and required computer software for the duration of the employment term.


Travel

The candidate may be on occasion required to travel for training purposes or for company-wide events.
