Job Description

Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It…

Hello! We’re Common Ground, and we’re on a mission to make the world a better place, one friendship at a time. It’s great to meet you.

Forging new friendships can be tough — especially in a place like Vancouver, Canada’s coldest city. But unlike its citizens, Vancouver isn’t alone. The Common Ground team has had similar experiences across the globe — from London to San Francisco, from Valencia to Boston — and we’re on a mission to change that. Thanks to technology, you can now find people to date in minutes or people to work for in hours (just like this ad 👌). But what about finding like-minded friends?

Your options are limited to Bumble & MeetUp — both are flawed and feel like an awkward last resort. The internet has somehow brought us closer together while keeping us further apart. Common Ground is changing that — but we need help, lots of help. And that’s where you come in.

We’re looking for a savvy, hard-working student or recent graduate to join us as a Front-End Developer Intern. If you’re interested in helping us bring the world closer together again, read on.

Opportunity & Responsibilities

You’ll be joining the team as one of Common Ground’s very first engineers. You’ll help to shape the foundation of our Front End application and learn atonnein the process. You’ll be working directly with the Founders to figure out how the product should behave, the UI/UX, and the application framework.

More concretely, you’ll be working on:

  • Running the A/B testing, deploying and iterating over the design. You’ll directly interact with customers to review the project.
  • The first iteration of the web app built on React. You’ll have the choice and freedom to use your own UI framework to build on.
  • The core UI framework of the platform

This is a part-time role with a flexible schedule — we have regular co-working sessions, which are almost as fun as Common Ground’s events.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate would have the following experiences:

  • Eager to work on a startup and build a new revolution for how friendships are formed
  • Knowledge of back-end design and NodeJS is excellent but not required
  • Knowledge of JavaScript, TypeScipet, React, CSS/HTML
  • 2+ years experience developing front-end applications OR university degree in software development
  • Ability to wear different hats. We’ll be working together closely. There will be days you’ll be developing, and there will be days you’ll be stuffing envelopes for an upcoming event until 1 in the morning.

What’s in it for you?

This is an unpaid opportunity. We’re building this project from the ground up — our budget is close to 0, and even the Founders are working for free.

We’re preparing to raise money later this year. When we do, the team (including you!) will be the first to get paid — plus a backdated bonus to recognize the work done to get us there.

For now, we want to reward you in every way we can. That includes:

  • All work expenses paid (including transportation, meals, drinks, etc.)
  • If this sounds like your jam, then get in touch; we'd love to hear from you!
  • A job & salary once we close our fundraising round, plus a sign-on bonus
  • Stock options in the company (once you become an employee)
  • Unlimited free access to all our social events, including food & drink
  • The opportunity to learn first-hand the process of building a startup alongside two Founders who have been building companies for almost 20 years between them.
  • One-on-one mentorship with Kousha, a Principle Software Engineer and one of the early engineers of Twilio, Inc, who has been coding for over ten years.

How to Apply

Please https://ide.codingame.com/invite/7960872b748e592dcd link and take this short coding test. It shouldn't take you more than 5/10min to complete. We will contact you via email once you do so.
