Job Description

Solex is seeking a Junior Designer/Design Engineer-in-Training to join our Operations group.

Who We Are

Solex is a trusted, technology-based solution provider to industries around the world that are looking for practical and robust answers to their thermal processing and material handling challenges.

Our highly collaborative global team of professionals is passionate about working with customers to understand their operational needs, whether that’s to produce a better product, improve their process, optimize their performance or increase production. This regularly sparks opportunities at Solex to creatively apply proven science to everything from the heating, cooling and drying of bulk materials to industrial waste heat recovery and reuse, renewable energy, decarbonization and more.

Our work will continue to take us around the world and across a variety of applications, both known and new. Today, our solutions can be found embedded within many aspects of our daily lives – from the crops we grow and the foods we eat to the compostable containers we use and the batteries in our phones and cars.

And we are only getting started. At Solex, we aspire to be the change. Come change with us!

What You'll Do

As a Designer, you will work as part of our technical team to support the successful design, implementation, and operation of Solex’s unique heat exchange equipment throughout the life cycle. You will be involved in projects in all corners of the globe and in applications ranging from the production of sugar to the development of next-generation solar-thermal electricity generation. You will be supported by an experienced and diverse team and provided with pathways to develop your career and technical expertise.

The Junior Designer is required to perform a range of duties primarily in support of the Design and Product Development group. The majority of your time will be spent utilizing CAD software to design custom equipment to meet the specific needs of customers and to produce fabrication-ready drawing packages for our manufacturing facilities. You will develop an understanding of stainless steel fabrication processes, solids handling principles, and the regulatory requirements associated with process equipment and pressure vessels in different global jurisdictions.

As part of your development, you will also be expected to support activities in our Project and Process engineering departments. This may include specification reviews, laboratory testing of bulk solids products at our facility in Calgary, participation in pilot testing at customer facilities, and other tasks which will help to build an understanding of how the work of our Design and Product Development group impacts the overall function of our business.

Some specific core tasks include:

  • Review and adapt our designs based on changes to fabrication facility capabilities
  • Actively support continuous improvement and product improvement initiatives through interactions with local and remote team members
  • Produce high-quality construction packages
  • Review and updating of design standards
  • Drafting and 3D modeling
  • Reviewing and checking drawings to ensure they follow the necessary specifications and standards, including thermal and structural calculations

Where You’ll Go

Your journey with Solex will begin with the Design and Product Development team and there are opportunities to specialize and advance both within this team and elsewhere in the organization. As our organization grows and changes we are always in need of talented and well trained staff to fill roles throughout our team. You’ll have the opportunity to take the initiative with your personal development and chart your own course for a career with Solex. This could mean focussing on growing the skills and capabilities of the Design and Product Development team, bringing your technical acumen to the Project Engineering team, or finding new ways for our equipment to solve customer’s problems within the Process engineering team.

What You Bring

Solex primarily manufactures moving bed heat exchangers for bulk solids, a highly specialized niche market. Direct experience with our equipment portfolio is not required. However, experience in stainless steel manufacturing, process piping, pressure vessels, solids silos/bins, pumping skids, or other heat transfer experience would be highly beneficial. Some detailed requirements for this role are shown below.

  • C.E.T. certification or registration as an EIT would be an asset
  • Working knowledge and experience with MS Office 365 (Excel, Word, SharePoint, etc.)
  • Previous experience using 3D Modeling and drafting software to produce manufacturing drawings
  • 0-5 years experience in a similar role
  • Mechanical Engineering Tech., Mechanical Design Tech., Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering

Working Conditions

  • Overtime expected occasionally
  • Home office and Solex office based (Calgary)
  • Some travel may be required

Solex offers a competitive salary, health & dental benefits including a health/wellness spending account, unlimited vacation, an annual bonus program, and much more!

Solex Thermal Science is an equal opportunity employer, committed to an inclusive and safe work environment for people of all backgrounds.

We thank all applicants for their interest. However, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
