Investments and Donor Relations Lead

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Investments and Donor Relations, the Investments & Donor Relations Lead is responsible for supporting Women Building Futures’ investment and donor relations efforts through securing and stewarding values-aligned relationships that achieve the outcomes of Women Building Futures’ strategic plan and funding priorities. This role will support the development and implementation of fund development strategies to support ongoing and emerging financial priorities.

The Investments and Donor Relations portfolio is an exciting component of WBF’s impact. It oversees the critical funding from community investments and growth partnerships that enables our organization to grow our impact across Alberta and into new regions across Canada.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with existing and new donors, including foundations, corporations, and government agencies, based on integrity and alignment on WBF’s mission.
  • Research and identify aligned funding opportunities through existing and new investment channels.
  • Work with Senior Manager, WBF staff members, and investment partners to ensure day-to-day operations, data collection, contractual obligations, and partnership deliverables for all investments are completed.
  • Support implementation of comprehensive strategic plans to identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors, sponsors, and partners.
  • Ensure investment payments are received on schedule from partners, as required.
  • Prepare and submit investment proposals, gift agreements, and grant applications to secure funding from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
  • Prepare briefing documents and cases for support to ensure internal alignment.
  • Maintain and grow a network of investment partners across various sectors that support WBF’s strategy, including foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
  • Prioritize strong internal communication across the organization, including information sharing with other departments on status of existing and potential investments, ongoing funding priorities, and tracking of actions.
  • Support the development of budgets and activation plans for new investments, as required.
  • Represent WBF at external events and clearly articulate our values impact, strategy, and ways to support WBF with confidence and professionalism.


Skills & Abilities

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including tact and diplomacy are necessary in order to work with diverse backgrounds; must be able to interact professionally with a variety of internal and external client groups.
  • Great capacity to adapt in a dynamic and changing environment.

  • Advanced knowledge and established skillset with Microsoft suite.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and resource management skills.
  • Experience developing best practices and contributing to continuous improvement of donor stewardship processes, including a willingness to learn and to try different approaches.
  • Knowledge of and comfort working with fundraising software and donor databases (ex. Raiser’s Edge).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience in grant writing and proposal development.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • A connector who is interested in building and nurturing relationships and strengthening a network that includes industry, government, and donors.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines, combined with a comfort managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Excellent public relations skills, dynamic and energetic individual with excellent communications and public speaking skills.
  • Flexible; able to address the challenges faced by industry partners and sometimes outside of business hours.
  • Exceptional oral, written, and communication skills.


Education & Experience

  • Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible experience in grants, investments or donor activation, recognition, and stewardship.
  • Experience in donor management software, such as Raiser's Edge, would be an asset.
  • Degree or Diploma in related field or equivalent experience (e.g., fund development, business, marketing, communications, public relations, social sciences).
  • Awareness of the challenges of women working in non-traditional roles; cultural, economic, and social barriers to adult learning and employment.
