Reporting to the Administrator at Providence Manor and Manager of IPAC/OHSW at Providence Care Hospital, the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Lead liaises with the corporate IPAC Team to support all sites. While acting as a resource to infection control, clinical staff and program leadership with respect to infection control practices, the IPAC Lead promotes and coordinates evidence-based practice and patient safety. The Lead supports the application, implementation, and maintenance of IPAC within a program-based structure and assumes a leadership role in professional development, quality improvement and research activities within the profession. The IPAC Team Leader liaises with professional associations, regulatory colleges and other appropriate groups to help to inform processes which promote excellence in IPAC practice/guidance. The IPAC Lead also acts as a representative on various committees. Acting as a strong leader and exemplary role model, the incumbent will contribute to achieving the Mission, Vision and Values of Providence Care through living the values at every opportunity and facilitating communication and profession-specific knowledge translation throughout Providence Care Hospital, Community Programs/Services, and Providence Manor.


Education & Experience


  • Working knowledge of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and Accreditation Standards or commitment to pursue education in this respect within two years.
  • Certified in infection prevention through the CBIC (Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology) or commitment to complete no later than April 1, 2025.
  • Completion of or enrolment in a post graduate IPAC course (endorsed by IPAC Canada)
  • Experienced healthcare professional with a health sciences background and/or regulated healthcare profession, Master’s preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in role of ICP in providing infection prevention and control in a healthcare setting, preferred
  • Member of Infection Prevention and Control Canada (IPAC Canada)


Position Duties & Responsibilities


  • Provides direction, consultation and expertise regarding Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) policies, practice accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements and ensures all activities undertaken by ICPs are consistent with these standards.
  • Evaluates (critically) research and evidence-based practices and incorporate appropriate findings into routine practices.
  • Participates in hospital and community teams and committees including the Product Evaluation Committee, Antibiotic Stewardship Committee, accreditation committee, Community Infection Prevention Partners (CIPP), and Joint Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Develops, coordinates, supports ICPs to implement standardized outbreak investigations and control measures.
  • Provides IPAC expertise as well as support and direction to ICPs when there are related opportunities to improve quality of care and services at Providence Care sites.
  • Works to advance the overall goals and identify and evaluate annual aims/objectives of the IPAC Service, in collaboration with other members of the IPAC team members and the Program Director.
  • Provides on-call support on rotational basis.
  • Carries out surveillance by reviewing microbiology reports, conducting rounds, and reviewing patient/client charts. Analyzes collected data and reports cases or epidemiologically significant findings to appropriate personnel or public health body for appropriate follow-up, as a measure to minimize the effects of clusters/outbreaks
  • Develops, tracks, and coordinates IPAC policies and procedures for Providence Care sites.
