The Opportunity


Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.


Under the general guidance and direction of the Supervisor of Recreation Facilities, the Facility Operator 2 position is responsible for performing routine maintenance and operational tasks for the City of Barrie’s community and recreation centres. Specifically, this position is responsible for performing routine maintenance and operational tasks on various facility spaces and equipment; and responding to basic and semi-complex maintenance and operational requests and issues. Overall, this position plays an integral role in performing routine maintenance and operation tasks within the City’s community and recreation centres in order to provide a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for recreation programs and activities.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)


  • Pool Operator Course from an accredited association, organization, or institution
  • Secondary School Diploma
  • Certified Ice Technician (CIT) Designation from the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA); and


OR
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certifications
  • Certified Aquatics Technician (CAT) Designation from the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA); and
  • Building Management and Operations Course from the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA)
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification obtained prior to start date
  • Basic Refrigeration Course from an accredited association, organization, or institution
  • Legal II Course from the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA)


Experience


  • One (1) year of experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities in a recreation facility operations and maintenance work environment


Knowledge/Skill/Ability
  • General knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements:
  • Exert effort to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, reaching, grasping, bending forward, stooping, kneeling, crouching or turning
  • Occupiers’ Liability Act
  • Demonstrated ability to:
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission, and values
  • Basic verbal communication, written communication, customer service, teamwork, attention to detail, and time management skills
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing lighting controls, environmental systems, security systems, computerized maintenance management systems software (CMMS), and building automation systems (BAS)
  • Exert effort to lift, push, pull, or carry objects for short periods of time
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, and Word)
  • Maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
  • Availability to work outside of scheduled work hours to perform standby/on-call or emergency response duties
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Health Protection and Promotion Act

  • Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure. Existing employees will be grandparented from this requirement.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing


Other Important Information


Location: City of Barrie Recreation Facility


Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week with a varying schedule including special or rotating shifts, to support business demand with overtime required occasionally


Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2023 pay range:


  • Pay Level: Level 5
  • Yearly Salary: $64,750.40to $77,542.40 per year
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $31.13 to $37.28 per hour
