Job Description

Location: 625 Victoria Street East, Whitby, Ontario or 91 Judson Street, Etobicoke ON
Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Management, our office is seeking several Environmental Management Specialists to develop, implement, and maintain the Environmental Management Program (EMP) for Operations in alignment with the Metrolinx Environmental Management System (EMS), Environmental Protection Act and other regulations and best practices to effectively manage environmental risks and drive continual performance improvement.
What will I be doing?
  • Coordinates environmental aspects of projects with internal groups, consultants, and external agencies to meet governing / regulatory authority requirements
  • Develops, implements, maintains, and continuously improves an Environmental Management Program (EMP), (including policies, procedures, tools and training) that is aligned with the Corporate EMS and adheres to ISO 14001:2015, regulatory requirements and best practices, while meeting operational needs and constraints
  • Leads, plans and conducts objective environmental audits on applicable environmental regulatory compliance in areas including but not limited to chemical management, waste management, air emissions, refrigerant control, tanks and fuel management, water and effluent, contaminated sites, construction environmental controls, wildlife and vegetation
  • Develops and supervises environmental awareness and training programs and implements Business Unit program initiatives
  • Assists management by providing information, interpretation, and clarification of compliance requirements and permit / approval conditions.
  • Identifies emergent maintenance and capital rehabilitation improvement strategies and projects that will drive environmental performance
  • Represents Business Units’ EMP needs and regulatory obligations to assure their consideration in project implementation.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Completion of a diploma in related discipline - or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed equivalent
  • Environmental Professional (EP) Certification an asset.
  • Experience with the implementation or audit of ISO Management Systems, preferably ISO 14001:2015.
  • Expert knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements governing environmental aspects including but not limited to ISO 14001:2015, by-laws, regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated years of related experience completing and or complying with environmental audit and regulatory requirements, preferably within the transportation, manufacturing, or contaminated sites sectors.
  • Expert knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements governing environmental aspects including but not limited to ISO 14001:2015, by-laws, regulations, standards, and best practices
Work Conditions
  • Exposure to hazards (e.g. train movements, designated substances, fumes, and flammable / combustible agents); required to wear / use personal protective equipment (e.g. hard hats, hearing protection, protective eyewear, fall protection, respirators, protective footwear and/or high visibility clothing) while at facilities, construction sites, and other workplaces.
  • Hours of work – May work evenings and / or weekends and is subject to call-in during emergencies and to support / conduct incident investigations.
  • Driving requirements – driving to facilities, stations and other workplaces, as required; requires a valid drivers’ license.
