Job Description

Job overview:

The Director of Care assumes authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services, and the provision of quality nursing care on a 24-hour basis to the residents of the facility in accordance with the Nursing Homes Act, Continuing Care Health Services Standards, Long Term Care Accommodation Standards and other Federal and Provincial acts, regulations, standards and legislation.


In collaboration with facility Administrator, allocates nursing resources in an efficient and economic manner to enable each resident to attain or maintain the highest possible physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being. Collaborates with residents and families, other BSF areas, medical professionals, consultants, and organizations, to develop, support and coordinate resident care, related administrative functions, and to represent the interests of the facility.


Within the scope of this position, the Director of Caretakes on a key role to continually provide an environment promoting a culture of continuous improvement, safety of residents and clients, staff and all others and freedom from harm or injury.


As a representative of the Brenda Strafford Foundation, the person in this position is a leader in the Foundation’s efforts to deliver a person centered care approach, promote a culture of safety, and are accountable to uphold the Mission, Vision and Values in the achievement of the strategic priorities of The Foundation.


This position is accountable for ethical practice and the understanding of ethical behaviour and reporting as defined by The Brenda Strafford Foundation’s policy and process.

Job Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities of the Director of Care include, but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge of AHS Patient Based Funding system to support operational decisions (staffing, quality improvement risk management)
  • Act as a clinical resource person to staff. Deploy available resources effectively;
  • Promotes teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communication;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Administrator related to the job function;
  • Monitor and evaluate the nursing staffing requirements of the facility to ensure pre-approved staffinglevels are maintainedwithinbudgeted hours;
  • Ensure Resident Care Policies and Procedures are reviewed and updated when necessary;
  • Ensure that specialized functions are properly carried out, such as Pharmacy, and delivery of medical supplies and equipment;
  • Participate in the organizational OH&S program. Role model and provide leadership for safe work practices and behaviours.
  • Collaborates with the services of Social Work, Pharmacy, MDS and Restorative Therapy as they relate to resident care;
  • In conjunction with the Administrator, manages the annual budget for nursing supplies and equipment. Demonstrates knowledge of RAI MDS 2.0 including coding, CAPS, outcome measures, RUGs quality indicators;
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of nursing personnel and assures sufficient staff are hired;
  • Manage performance appraisals and disciplinary actions;
  • Ensures residents admitted for care can be safely cared for and maintains Nursing Home occupancy using Pathways system;
  • Identify in-service training programs for the nursing staff, including staff orientation; Facilitate the professional development of nursing in conjunction with Education Lead;
  • Interacts courteously with residents, family members, visitors, contractors, business associates, and representatives of government agencies;
  • Review, investigate and ensure proper documentation on all the nursing job injuries, accidents and unusual incidents to residents and visitors;
  • Monitor the maintenance of accurate clinical records and reports required by legislation and in accordance with recognized nursing principles;
  • Coordinate and serve on the various committees responsible for resident care;
  • Develop and implement nursing area master rotations for ESP Scheduling System;
  • Establishes, implements, and monitors the infection control program designed to provide a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment designed to prevent the devilment and transmission of disease and infection;
  • Complete clinical indicators, analyzing and identifying gaps, complete quality initiatives as required based on identified deficiencies.
  • Participates in the preparation for audits, inspections, investigations and surveys including, but not limited to the Continuing Care Health Service and Accommodation Standards, collaborates with the Administrator in the response and action planning, and implements any follow-up QA required for any nursing related allegations;
  • Work closely with the Medical Directors, and Physicians to address specific medical initiatives and issues;
  • In the absence of the Facility Administrator, the Director of Care is responsible for the overall operations of the facility;
  • Develops and implements on call roster for position and Program Managers;
  • Mentors and leads the Nursing team to ensure effective care and services and optimal resident outcomes;
  • Completes compulsory education modules as per schedule (six months of hire date), within 3 months of significant update or revision to training materials, every two years, thereafter.
  • Coordinate Nursing Quality Improvement Initiatives, projects and research as identified by clinical indicators;

Qualifications:

Education:

B.S.N. degree or approved equivalent.

Experience:

Five years clinical experience in geriatric nursing. Previous supervisory and management experience.
