Job Description
Result of Service
The Consultant will work under the supervision of the Information Officer, Communication and Awareness Unit, Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) and will be responsible but not limited to: Overseeing and coordinating the production of high-quality video material for broadcast and multimedia use in line with the objectives of the Convention and its Protocols mandate.

Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational setting
The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in
Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature in Rio in 1992. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by United Nations Environment Programme. Its main tasks are to arrange for and service meetings of the Conference of the Parties, including preparation of pertinent documentation, operation of the central node of the clearing-house mechanism, liaison and coordination with other international bodies and processes and, in close collaboration with these partners, the provision of technical support for the effective implementation of the Convention.
Opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and entering into force in December 1993, the Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty for the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of the components of biodiversity and the equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the use of genetic resources. With 196 Parties, the Convention has near universal participation among countries. The Convention seeks to address all threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services, including threats from climate change, through scientific assessments, the development of tools, incentives and processes, the transfer of technologies and good practices and the full and active involvement of relevant stakeholders including indigenous and local communities, youth, NGOs, women and the business community. The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing are supplementary agreements to the Convention.
The Cartagena Protocol, which entered into force on 11 September 2003, seeks to protect biological diversity from the potential risks posed by living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology. To date, 172 Parties have ratified the Cartagena Protocol. The Nagoya Protocol aims at sharing the benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources in a fair and equitable way, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of relevant technologies. It entered into force on 12 October 2014 and to date has been ratified by 139 Parties.
Duties and Responsibilities
Using their own equipment, and that of the secretariat, create and develop multimedia (audio/video) content, including capturing video footage, with audio and suitable lighting and framing, in line with the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Protocols.
Pitch feature stories that directly relate to CBD priorities, including content for the website, social media platforms, broadcast opportunities, and video statements by the Executive Secretary.
Read, review, and edit scripts and determine the best method for producing video from the script.
Ensure that any and all third-party materials (photos, video, music, etc.) used in the video deliverables are licensed or cleared for use by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Edit footage and interviews, including adding subtitles as appropriate, into a variety of video deliverables intended for broadcast, web and for use on our social media platforms.
Propose programme formats, technical approaches and innovations
Provide technical support to international and local press organizations.
Develop and manage production schedules.
Recommend equipment purchases, upgrades, or replacements.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special Skills
Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in media/multimedia production, production management, film making, or related area is required. A first level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible working experience in video production (both short and long formats), of which (5) years at the national and international level is required.
Experience with the latest technical developments and production techniques is required.
Experience producing video content for various digital platforms is required.
Working experience in high proficiency in video editing and post-production softwares (ex. portfolio/reel) is required.
Ability to understand and apply project/corporate brand guidelines is required.
Familiarity with issues related to the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Protocols, the UN system and other international sustainable development-related processes is required.
Strong interest in global affairs and public policy is desirable.
Skills Required
Advanced knowledge of the Adobe Suite particularly in the video and audio editing, mastering After Effects.
Knowledge of Avid Composer and the broadcasters specs.
Ability to work with large/small production team.
Proficiency in the use of all production equipment: video camera, still camera, audio, and lighting.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including effectively presenting information to non-technical partners.
Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities.
Strong creative and digital technology skills.
Strong attention to detail, initiative, and follow through skills.
Sound judgement, maturity, and discretion.
Ability to work with very limited production resources to create impactful messages.
Skills desirable
Knowledge of script writing and for broadcast is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable.
